Hello all! So I was looking to reboot an old thread I started many moons ago which fizzled out after a few introductory posts and nothing more. I worked really hard on this plot though and really want to see if I can get it off the ground. I still have a plot mapped out and important events to drive characters forward, so if what is written below is of interest to you or you have any questions, then by all means please post.
An important note though, participation will require the ability to write 3-4 paragraphs, divided between 2 characters per player- one human and one angel.
Aurelia, Louisiana has seen much better days. Considering it was completely decimated by the BP oil spill a few years ago, just over ten-thousand people call Aurelia home- and that number is shrinking every year. But it's not the oil mess that drove people away...
In recent years the local flora and fauna have been suffering from strange maladies that have gone unexplained by visiting botanists and zoologists. Dead deer sporting darkened tumors found dead in the countryside, trees weeping a sickly blue chlorophyl, and swamps smelling like a potent mixture of gasoline and rotten eggs. Nothing like this has ever happened in Aurelia before on record. Actually, the only other noteworthy event to compare to this outbreak was almost fifteen years ago, the night a bright blue meteor fell from the sky, roaring like an erupting volcano (though no crater or meteor was ever found and the only video evidence of this event was a terribly recorded VHS tape).
The cause of these strange maladies to the plants and animals is well known by the locals. Since the end of winter three years ago, dark springs of viscous oil have begun to bubble up from the swamp marshes and beneath the sands of the ocean beaches. Those fish schools which haven't fled are slowly killed by the dark substance and the wildlife is on the run.
When the phenomenon was first reported, the oil companies descended on the town looking for damage control and drilling opportunities, only to discover that the substance was not crude oil. All that speculative oil money picked up and left as quick as it came, along with the fishermen, the farmers, the loggers, and the backwoods citizens. Tourism is gone and the town will soon exist only as a blip on a map, a town that exists because it exists. There are no jobs beyond the convenience store and fast food joints, no
To those that remain in the town of Aurelia, life as they know it has been shattered. For the longest time the oily substance was found only in the wilds and the population, though disheartened, was safe.
Now the dark substance has found its way through the steel pipes of people's homes. Those who drink the substance quickly choke and collapse unconscious- never to wake from a dreamless sleep. Those who bathe in it are riddled with cold second degree burns and soon suffer the same fate of those who drink the substance. The local hospital has dedicated a whole ward to these victims and a team from the CDC is due to investigate any day now (though that was their promise several months ago). But people some, a chosen few, suffer... other effects. Their minds are not quite the same after coming in contact with the substance, and their actions- you can't believe that they are somehow in control of themselves. They see the world through different eyes, are driven by different desires than those they had while still lucid.
Someone close to you has suffered the unthinkable, something which has happened to only a handful of townsfolk so far- they have been touched in some way by the liquid. And so you're faced with a choice- pack up and leave to live with a distant relative whom you know little about and like even less. Or you can stay and try to weather the storm.
Stay and heed the words of an odd, strange being who you meet after school.
A stranger who raises no alarms of danger in your mind, but is definitely more than he or she sees.
A stranger who might, with your help, discover the source of the black springs...
