Thread: The Hunted and the Hunter

She wore a modest satin gown of emerald hues. He wore robes indicative of his rank. She had never seen them before, but she had heard of an indestructible sort of cloth that could provide better protection than even the thickest plate mail. She wondered if she was staring at such a cloth right now. The other five were dressed similarly, each wearing an outfit that allowed for quick and quiet movements. They also wore distinctive black masks.

He tells me to be a black mask, an elite assassin in his service. If I had bothered just once to infiltrate and discover the inner workings of Red Mask Terror, I might not have been caught off guard like I am now, and I could have known the context of this offer. Hrgh... I hate taking orders from other people, but it doesn't look like I have a choice anymore. I should empty my frustrations on whoever they assign me to, lest I lose myself in a bout of anger.

Without removing her gaze from the eyes of the Red Mask, the lady purposefully removed her glasses, folded them, and left them on the blank paper in front of her. Keeping her back straight, she leaned forward ever so slightly while interlacing her fingers on the desk in clear view. It had been ages since the last time she had confronted a powerful opponent and she wasn't sure if she still could. But something deep down inside could only smile at the prospect of taking all that she had been learning so far and putting it to the ultimate test, out in the real world. She hated to think this way, because she almost wanted to thank her intruders for the generous offer. She reminded herself that she could only kill the people that they told her to kill, when they told her to kill them. She held back a scowl.

"So, I'm either with you or I'm against you. All this time, I thought our business together had been a sign that I was with you, but you have something else in mind for me." She closed her eyes. "I assure you, I am still with you." She said this as her eyes opened once again, emoting a growing coolness and seriousness. "I accept."

Yevor gave a wicked grin and the submission of the necromancer. He stood there in silence for a few moments, letting the triumph sink in before he spoke.

"Your target is named Adriac Veras. He is a Drow warrior that was last seen in Noerdal..two Black Masks are waiting at the North gate for you to join them in this hunt."

And with that, he and the others walked out and snuck off the grounds, each back to their respective lair.

Argh, that brute! He's nothing if he doesn't have absolute control! How I hate those types, and forcibly was I drafted into his service! If not for his black dogs, I would not have questioned the wisdom of having his head on my platter for the evening supper!

After they had left just as swiftly as they had come, Lady Lahkesis stayed in the study a while longer. With the blank paper in front of her, she copied and recalled every detail about the occasion. She made diagrams of her house and which of her runes of detection had gone off, and how much time had passed before they went off and when they made themselves known. On separate pages, she copied every detail about their physical appearance and exposed mannerisms of her six intruders. After she had done so she compiled an account, several pages in length, of the entire event up to the time they had left for good. She took this stack of papers and placed them in a hidden compartment within the floorboards underneath the south corner of the rug. Sitting back at her desk, she then took down, word for word, the instructions she had been bluntly left with.

Noerdal. That's where Nancy is. I don't expect to find a vampire there as much as I would the other two locations. I can use her to do some advance scouting, but she wouldn't be very good at that. I know she is physically unable to harm any creature more powerful than a small dog. The most depressing consideration I have is knowing that when she is attacked, I will be forced out of my own senses and into hers. If that should happen while I am engaged with a powerful opponent... ! I need to destroy my target as quickly as possible so I can get back to my research! In the meantime, I will do what I can to keep Nancy and the others out of trouble. Chester is still fairly close, so I will have him return to me. Harold will just have to stay put as soon as he arrives.

A drow warrior named Adriac Veras. They already have two assassins on this one, and they have gone far out of their way to recruit a third. I find it hard to believe they would consider even a warrior of my own race such a great threat. Maybe he isn't, and all of this is just a test of my loyalty. I shudder at the thought that they would have seen so completely through my defenses! How many human lifetimes have I batted away all suspicion of such things! It's just not logical that they would know! There has to be more to this event than I can see from here. Assuming they don't know my kinship with their mark, they could just intend to see the extent of my own abilities and the other two are there to keep any situation from getting out of hand. One for him and one for me. That seems more logical.

At the end of several hours in the study, Lady Lahkesis found herself weary and hungry. After dinner, she went straight to bed, not bothering with her usual delve into her den to discover forbidden secrets of life and death. Just before she turned in, she left a note addressed to Mortimer, asking him to have her horse ready before tomorrow's first light.

Alech smiled, regardless of the words she had spoken, although the hairs on the back of his neck couldn’t help but stand on end. It was not everyday a man found out he’d be an ideal target for vampires, especially when a vampire was sat opposite him. Being only half elf, he was not as strong as actual elves and his magic abilities stopped at healing and stealth. I probably taste just as good though… He thought, suppressing a shiver.

“Could you feed off animals?” He asked, thinking of the boar meat that she had ravaged back in Holn. “If you wanted to, that is, and if you were hungry enough.” He knew that animals probably didn’t taste as well as humans, but perhaps there were some that worked well enough to soothe the hunger pains.

“Yes, if we’re hungry enough…” She commented, and then she looked thoughtful for a moment. “Actually, some vampires go on ‘hunting trips’…where they hunt for wild cats and bears. It’s quite dangerous, but that’s the thrill of it I suppose.” She was beginning to get anxious with hunger. Under the table her hands were shaking subtly once more, and it took a lot of restraint to hold back from slinking off to attack someone.

“Tonight will be the first night I have had human blood in…a couple of weeks at least,” Alex spoke, wrinkling her nose at the thought of having to kill one more rabbit with her fangs. Glancing up briefly she spotted a woman approaching the bar, and her brow perked. She didn’t seem to belong in a tavern with old drunken men, so of course she caught at least a part of Alex’s attention.

The sun set and the two Black Masks left Friok on swift black horses. The ten mile ride between Friok and Noerdal would take them a half hour at the most. These horses would not need rest for a long time. The Black Masks's horses were as elite as they were.

"We must leave." Adriac spoke hurriedly. He looked out of a window and gestured for Luvon to follow him. Silently, he opened the window and crept out, standing between Luvon's house and his neighhbor's.

    ((Manda, ever read 'Twilight'?))

Alech listened, enchanted by the world she lived in. It seemed almost fantasy for him, living all his life in relative comfort and peace, with no speak of vampires outside of storybooks. But her life was exciting, on the edge and downright dangerous!

“Have you ever been on a hunting trip?” He asked, his tone curious but doubtful. She looked too small to be pictured even remotely close to a great grizzly or wild cat.

He was surprised by how long she’d been without human blood, but not surprised at how she chose it over the blood of animals. He wondered silently if she could last till nightfall, being surrounded by humans in this small village.

He followed Alex's gaze to the woman near the bar, she did look out of place in this environment, but you never could tell with these things. Perhaps she was the innkeeper's daughter, or wife?

(ooc-Yes, I'm a big fan of that book...and the series. ^_^ I base Alex off of it kind of. Except the part where they go all sparkley in the sunlight...'cause i dont think the others in this rp would go for that. In a way she's kind of like Alice in the book...except not really,)

For a moment she grinned at him, her eyes watching him knowingly; as if she knew he was sizing her up in his mind against a wild cat or a bear. “Well, living in a cave on a mountain…everyday was like a hunting trip…but no, I’ve never went after a bear…” She answered, unsure if he wanted to know more if she had ever been on a hunting trip…or if she had ever taken down a bear. “Someday maybe.” Alex spoke thoughtfully.

It was shocking to hear that she was actually considering the thought of hunting for bear. She was so…small, and it looked like a bear could snap her in half! “Perhaps you can come with,” She offered, looking him over briefly as if wondering if he would last on a bear hunt.

Now that she had held off a bit longer than she should have on feeding, her honey-golden eyes were starting to get a little darker. It wasn’t noticeable when her eyes had changed, but it had happened sometime after he had gotten his food.

"My name's Nancy. Nancy Turlesque." *sip* "I came here to visit a cliff overlooking a river," *munch munch* "east of the town." *swallow* "I hear it is a breathtaking view, and I want to capture it in a scenic portrait." *sip*

It was a complicated juggling act that her tongue performed, vegetables going in and words coming out. Slouching in her bar stool, she tried keeping a decent conversation with scraggly-bearded man that seemed to consist (considering his breath) entirely of beer and potatoes. His comments continually insinuated that the best views are actually visible from inside the inn, within his very room. Her eyes avoided his general direction. Instead, she exercised her peripheral vision on the entire rest of the dining room. Everywhere there seemed to be a copy of the genuine article sitting next to her, so it's understandable if she grew a bit pessimistic about finding a suitable escort outside of town. Traveling unescorted she did out of necessity, but if it could be avoided, she would like to try.

She didn't notice at first, but she felt a bit slow when at last she finally did see her. Pale skin, short black hair, a deer-skin over her petite frame... and a young man in front of her. Not just any young man, but a sober one! Were they looking at her? She glanced back, but they had returned their attention to each other in conversation. Fed up with her current prospects, she took the chance and stood up to leave an empty bowl behind her. Ducking and dodging drunken antics, weaving and bobbing her way to the couple at the table she did with the grace of a cow, though she had nothing near that sort of body type.

((My younger sister is obsessed with the twilight series, she got so fanatical about them I had to give it a go. Yes your character does remind me of Alice, small but deadly… :P))

Alech found it near impossible to picture Alex in a situation with a bear involved and coming out unscathed. It was scaring him even to think of it. “You should be careful…” He warned, shocked at her considering response. “Animals are tricky to predict, it takes a lot of experience.” He pulled on the cord around his neck, revealing the sharp canine tooth that was forever a reminder of what had nearly happened.

“I killed a bear once… But I was lucky…” His years of hunting had taught him a lot, but nothing could compare to that night, when he had barely escaped with his life. He carried the tooth of the great brown bear he had killed with him for good luck, and as a reminder to always be on the look out for danger. I guess I’m ignoring that reminder now… Sitting opposite a hungry vampire… He thought, smiling at the irony of it all. He would probably survive a bear attack now, if he were properly armed that is... He knew what to expect, he had learned his lesson. He ran a hand along the back of one of his bows, sat on the floor, feeling the silky smooth curve and perfection.

He caught a flurry of movement from the corner of his gaze and looked to see that the woman they had both noticed before was steadily making her way towards them from the bar, she wasn’t too graceful about it though. She had, no doubt, noticed their previous curious gaze and was about to tell them both to mind their own business, or so he supposed.
