Amber’s watch let off a beep as she fumbled to shut it off, her hands weak from sudden sleep. What a time to dose off, she thought bitterly as the watch was silenced. She looked back at the building, still silent and cold as it was two hours ago. Mustering up the courage she replaced her pack and stood up, dusting off her jeans. She drew her knife and slowly made her way to building, her senses on high alert.
She felt silly, almost like the video games her dad would play as she carefully opened the door, checking her corners, except losing at this game had a more lethal effect. She noticed an elevator across the hall but skipped over it, trusting the stairwell much more. She started her assent up, checking each floor plaque for anything that caught her eye. When one read kitchen, third floor, she felt a surge of delight go through her. It had been a while sense she had a proper meal, so she made her way for the kitchen in hopes of any food.
