Trixi just rolled her eyes at him some, missing most of the sadness in his look even though it was tugging at her heart to see that little bit of it. It was like she knew that she could never make him as happy as he could be. But she'd make him happy for the time being and try to make him as happy as she could. It was something at least, to ease that deep pain he felt.

"San Francisco?" she asked with a very confused look on her face. They'd gone to the far future, other worlds, even back to King Tut, but the idea of being in America was a little shocking to her. "Why are we in San Fran?" She looked between him and the controls of the TARDIS before shaking her head and heading towards the door out to get a peak at where they were at. Well really when they were at because they knew the where.

"I don't know. It isn't like she can talk." He indicated to the TARDIS consul with a shrug and the two of them looked out the doors into San Francisco the early 1900's. Late winter or maybe early spring. The sky was clear except a few clouds wisps.

Everyone seemed quite happy as they went about their days. "Really?" The Doctor asked no one in particular. "Well Trixi best get changed and then get to wandering who knows why we're here." He shrugged and hurried up to the dressing room. "Hmm so it looks to be post Victoria but pre-world war, that's got to be the Edwardian era." The Doctor pulled up a beautiful dress. "Which puts you beautiful ladies in dresses still." He grinned and held up a matching bonnet. "What do you think?"

She made a small 'hmphing' noise and sighed again as they stepped back in and off towards the TARDIS's extensive wardrobe. She was getting more excited as she walked, knowing just what kind of pretty dresses she would get to pull out this time. It seemed the pretty dresses made everything all the better for her. As she walked she pulled her hair up into something like loose bun that she hopped wouldn't show the elastic band that was keeping it up.

"I think," she began with her noise wrinkled up some. "That that is the most atrocious bonnet I have ever seen, Doctor. And it doesn't even go with anything at all that's in fashion right now. History major, Doctor, and woman with a passion for fashion. You can't fool me." She gave him a bright smile though, reaching her hand for the dress. "But I will take that."

She turned to go, off to find a few other more intimate things that she needed along with another hat before she stopped, turned and gave him a quick once over. "You'd look stunning in a nice high collar and a cravat, by the by."

About ten minutes later Trixi emerged from the depths of the changing room in the nice black and white stripped dress, adjusting the wide brim black hat with plums of white and grey feathers that laid along the brim in the front. "This wardrobe is amazing," she said mostly to her self since she wasn't paying any mind to if the Doctor was there. "There were boots in my size."

"Time traveler." The Doctor pointed to himself, but shrugged as he dug through the piles of clothing. He finally found something of the right era that he liked. He tossed the first hat he found off to the side and underneath he found a nice top hat. "I like." He grinned. Trixi had wandered off to change and the Doctor used that time to change. When Trixi returned looking absolutely astounding in the dress he was changed into a driving coat and beige slacks.

"You look wonderful. I do love this wardrobe it always has the best cloths." He tipped his top hat to her. "What do you think?" He spun around. "I'm thinking I might keep this as my regular coat. Ready to check out San Francisco? I haven't been here in a long time, mind you it was late 1990's." He offered his arm to Trixi as they stepped out of the TARDIS and into the beautiful San Francisco scene, on it's last pure day. As they stepped out the screen finally flickered up the date to the minute, April 17th 5 pm, giving them just 12 hours before the streets would be filled with screaming people and fire.

"Thank you Doctor," she said adjusted the light jacket a little bit more, brushing herself down before looking up at the Doctor's little twirl. "And you dear Doctor, look stunning as ever. Do you happen to know where I could find a parasol in here? Ah never mind," she said spotting one just behind him and slipping passed him to grab it, not opening it up until they were outside.

She took the Doctor's arm up in hers without thinking about it, still keeping a fair distance between them though. "I think it probably best if we had to pretend to be related or married at this point in time," she said looking up at him. "Otherwise there will be lots of eyebrows raised about a young unwed woman traveling around with an unwed man. But if you were my uncle escort or husband, there with be nothing at all wrong. I'm leaning towards the former personally"

"I shall be your Uncle then." The Doctor smiled, but it was not his usual deep grin, it was hiding the sadness deep in his hearts. Outside the TARDIS they were greeted with the beauty of the scene. It was a beautiful spring day. The air was filled with the smell of wood and coal burning with the undertones of the sea being brought up by a breeze. The view was clear across the wharf and into the sea. There were children playing nearby and women chattering about something deeply important to themselves. A few street cars passed by, more carts were pulled by horses than anything. A trolley whistled as it paused picking up passengers going up the hill.

"Now this is a beautiful day." Too beautiful. "Trolley ride?" The Doctor nodded to the Trolley and patted his pocket with his free hand indicating that he had picked up a wallet of money that would fit in with this time and place.

"Mmm Uncle Doctor," she said with a teasing kind of laugh looking around her excitedly at all the women in the pretty dresses and the tall, dapper men walking with them or alone. "I do wonder what year it is though. Just to know how close we are to one of the biggest events that will be felt for ages." She was of course trying to avoid saying too much on the off chance that someone heard her. "I mean they're at war now, almost always are in some kind of war, the American's. Either the Philippines, down in South America, or down at the border. Always fighting, humans."

She looked up at his offer for a trolley ride and smiled brightly. "I have wanted to ride the trolley in San Fran my entire life," she said with a giddy little laugh, letting him lead them on with a smile that couldn't be contained.

"Well we'll grab a newspaper as soon as we get a chance, my dear Niece." He grinned this time the pain behind it was gone. The two of them rode the Trolley up the hill to the park, the Doctor dropped the few coins that the ride cost into the collection box and helped Trixi off the Trolley with a graceful bow.

At the park the Doctor and Trixi spoke about whatever came to their minds, discussing the importance of Maggie and speculating on how they could help her. Then the subject went to Lut and what they would do about her the next time they saw her. The Doctor's anger towards Lut had been growing. The Doctor suspected that they would probably encounter her again soon.

As they walked around the Doctor saw a news stand. "Well here's our chance." He picked up the paper. "Look." He handed Trixi the paper and quickly payed the news stand owner. "Come on." The Doctor took Trixi's arm lightly and led her away from the stand into a secluded area.

"What do you want to do? If we are supposed to be here, at least according to the TARDIS..." The Doctor trailed off into thought. He thought about the two sides of the coin of being here. This was a natural disaster, or so he thought, so there wasn't a way to stop it, he would help people during the crisis, but only if Trixi wanted to stay. He didn't like the idea of putting her into that kind of danger, not that he didn't put her in dangers way all the time, but this was uncontrollable. What the Doctor and Trixi were unaware of was this was no natural disaster.

((If you want you can hear something...or see something in the park that gives them a hint that there is something sinister below the surface. I'm going to say that it took them about an hour or so of wandering to find the news stand.))

Trixi looked the paper over, reading every title she could to see if there was something they were missing. She didn't answer the Doctor right away and instead kept scanning and reading. "The TARDIS brought us here for a reason, Doctor," she mumbled after a moment without looking away from the print in front of her. "If we keep the TARDIS nearby we should be fine right? I want to see what we can do to fix it or stop it or whatever we can do." She looked up at him, green eyes wide, innocent, and begging that he let them stay to see what they could do. Even if it was saving a few people.

"There has to be something going on here for us to be here now, something small, behind the scenes or something." She looked around them again, thinking back to all the things she'd looked at as they had walked and wondered around. She'd never been to San Fransisco before, but still, something didn't feel right.

There had been miners, she'd seen them, not too many, but a few, in a group, covered in soot and dirt. Miners in San Fransisco in 1906 didn't make all that much sense to her, at least not ones that went digging in the ground like that, gold was found more often in rivers then in the ground really.

She looked back to the paper, scanning the society section to see the latest gossip and what not. "There's a rich new family in town, made it big in the gold rush a couple decades back, but there's been talk of them prospecting nearby still. We should probably go have a word with them." Trixi looked back up at the Doctor again, something very similar to a sly look coming up her face as she waited for the Doctor to say yes.

“Got to love the gossip pages.” The Doctor grinned and looked at the name. “Hmm,” he glanced at watch “We’ve got until 5 am to figure this out that leaves us a little less than 11 hours. We better get moving.”

It took them a bit of time to figure out where the family lived, it was up the hill a way set back from the road. It was a large mansion on an extraordinarily sculpted plot of land. There were people wandering the property many looked busy; a couple of women were enjoying the day. There was a guard standing at the gate to the property.

“May I help you?” He asked.

“Yes please.” The Doctor pulled out his physic paper, “I’m here to speak with Mr. Rosenburg. My niece and I just moved into the area. I was wondering about the mining prospects here.”

“Ah come right in Mr. Smith. Miss Smith you may join the ladies of the house up on the hill for their evening stroll if you wish, or wait for them in the Parlor for tea.” The Guard led the two of them up to the house and delivered informed the butler of their arrival.
