"I hate not being allowed to have a brain," she grumbled under her breath to the Doctor when they were out of earshot of most people. She loved this time in history for it's wars and stories and fashion. But she hated that she wasn't allowed to know anything of importance. Women were just starting to come out into the male centered world, and she was already far too educated to be from this time. It was going to be hard not to make a scene about it.

"So do you think that I should join the ladies for a stroll and see what they know, or wait for them and do some looking around?" she asked the Doctor, already leaning towards the latter herself just because she was too annoyed at that moment to deal with other ladies. She glanced about the works of art and the delicate and dark wall papers around them in the entry way as they waited to be seen and seen to.

"Look around." He whispered as the butler came down. "But chat them up when they get in here."

The guard explained their request and stepped back out as the Butler turned to them.

"Hello Mr. Smith I'll lead you into the study to wait for the Master. Miss if you want to wait for the Madam in the Parlor Alieana will show you the way." A maid stepped out of the door that probably led to the servants area near the kitchen.

The Doctor smiled as he glanced over his shoulder following the Butler, he mouthed "good luck" and turned back around so as to not bump into the Butler. He was led upstairs into the study. It was a library with a desk and some chairs set around in a manner pleasing to the eye. It looked like the typical library study straight out of a movie. The Butler spoke gently. "The Master will be with you momentarily. Would you like a cup of coffee?"

"Oh yes, Americans and their coffee." He grinned. The Butler smiled back at the joke and bowed out of the room.

As soon as he was gone the Doctor stepped away from the chair that he had been about to sit in. He stepped over to the desk and looked at the papers that were sitting out on it. There was nothing too interesting, it was just some notes about the recently bought property and what appeared to be a ledger of expenses. The Doctor moved to pull open the drawer, it was locked. Just as he was about to use the sonic screwdriver on it he heard foot steps and a voice saying "Yes Mr. Smith is waiting for you in the Study Sir."

"Tell him I'll be right there."

"Yes sir." By the time the Butler had opened the door with tray of coffee the Doctor was already sitting down. "Mr. Smith, the Master says he will be right with you."

"Ah thank you." The Doctor grinned and leaned forward to accept the offered coffee. He took a sip and nearly spit it out in disgust. As he waited for Mr. Rosenburg he attempted to figure out how to make it taste good with the goodies that were on the tray that the Butler had brought. He tried sugar and milk and could not get it to taste good enough to drink it all.

"Mmm alright," she nodded, spinning her now closed parasol in her hands before it was taken from her and put away in some coat closet. She was left in a sitting room with all the curtains drawn back. There was far too much lace in that room, though the colors were nice. She politely sat down on a little sofa and waited for the maid who'd shown her in to leave. Once she was sure she wasn't going to be coming back, having turned the offer for tea or coffee while she waited for them to return for tea.

Trixi stood and wandered about the little waiting room she was in first, looking at the pictures that were there. The looked like new pictures for the most part, and any older ones still seemed to have people who looked nearly identical to the ones in the newer pictures. That was odd. She looked an awful lot like her mother and there were lots of pictures of her as a child and pictures of her mother as a child in which it was hard to tell who was who in them. But these were adults and they quite nearly looked like twins. She'd have to tell the Doctor about that.

She felt like she should have a little notebook or a secret camera. She didn't even have her mobile with her then, having left it in her bag on the TARDIS. It wasn't needed in early 1900s San Fran...or at least she hadn't thought so. now she wished she brought it.

But as she went back to looking about the room one last time before venturing to other parts of the house she noticed that the room was at the hight of fashion. That wasn't unusual, really, they had money and that was obvious. But what was unusual was that it looked like they'd looked a catalog and bought every piece in a showcase room, and set up the exact same way. There was nothing personal about anything, even the pictures weren't set up in any way that made any emotional sense. "Huh," she hummed to herself as she slipped for the door.

She was about half way down the hall, walking towards the more private areas of the house when she heard whispered talking of the staff. She couldn't get close enough to figure out what they were saying. But she did find a nice little closet looking door. Which she opened and peered into, eyes taking a moment to adjust to the light since the open door blocked the light source of the hallway. Linens, china, older unfashionable nicknack's where what she expected. What she didn't expect was a little collection of machines and little gadgets that looked like they'd been crudely made to look like they fit the time. They looked like badly done steampunk items.

But she didn't get the chance to linger and look. Instead she reached out and grabbed the smallest of them that she could hide in her pocket and quickly closed the door as there were sounds of footsteps headed her way again. When she was turned she was greeted with the sight of the maid who'd shown her to the sitting room.

Before she could ask what she was up to she gave her an embarrassed smile. "I'm so very sorry," she said lathering on her accent even more. "I was looking for the loo. Obviously isn't it..." Instead she pointed about widely for the right direction to which the maid pointed behind Trixi with a nod for what side of the hall it was on. "Oh yes, thank you." Turning she headed for it even if she wasn't actually going to use it.

Mr. Rosenburg stepped into the room removing his jacket and hanging it on the hat stand that was there. "Hello you must be Mr. Smith. The Butler told me you were in here, said you had some questions for me."

"Yes that and my niece and I recently came into town and we're getting to know the people and the area. It is a lovely place. San Francisco."

"That it is." Rosenburg sat down at the desk. "Now what would you like to know?"

"I hear that you are quite the prospector. I was wondering what your secret was. You see we, my niece and I just came over from England and were going to start looking for some of that gold. We're a bit behind on the times with our search we know, but might as well give it a try if people are still pulling that shiny yellow rock out of the ground right?" Rosenburg nodded. "Well what sort of advice do you have for us two upstarts?"

"Keep looking. Don't listen to people. I've had days where I was just about to give up and look somewhere else when boom! I found a vein." The Doctor jumped a bit when Rosenburg said boom. "Savvy?" He grinned broadly and there was a hint of malice behind that grin.

"So I hear you are looking in this area for gold right?"

"Yes. I've been looking in the hill behind my house, I have a strong feeling about it."

    "Any luck?"

"I've found exactly what I looked for." The grin seemed more malicious as he spoke about this.

"Oh?" There was a ruckus from the hall.

    "Let me go."

"Mr. Rosenburg." The butler called from the hall.

"Come in what is going on?" The bulter entered with a struggling kid in tow. The kid looked like it had been wandering the streets for the last three years and hadn't had a proper bath in the interim.

"I found this little..." The butler glanced at the Doctor, "Girl about to sneak into the basement."

"Let me go." The girl grumbled. The Doctor stood and glanced at the filth covered girl. She looked up and grinned at the Doctor. "Ooo looks like someone has company. I suppose I'll just go now and let you get back to business, for however long it lasts from here on out." The Doctor took a step back stunned at who's face he was looking at and sat down abruptly in the chair he backed into.

"What's that suppose to mean?" Rosenburg leaned in close to look at the girl.

    "Take it however you want."

"I'm going to call the cops little girl unless you explain yourself."

"I was just looking for something to eat." She put up an innocent smile. "I meant no harm by it." She looked again to the Doctor, "Who are you here with?"

"My niece, Trixie..." The girl's eyes widened.

"You do travel with her. I knew it. Listen to me go to the basement!" The little girl yelled as loud as she could and the butler grabbed her lifting her off the ground and covered her mouth his hand. She bite down hard, "Don't worry about him he won't remember this anyway. Time for me to go. I'm waiting." With the last sentence she looked right at the Doctor and then disappeared. Rosenburg and the butler freaked out and started looking around for her. Rosenburg finally turned to the Doctor.

    "What did she mean?"

"What did who mean?" Little Maggie's appearance had already slipped from his mind. "What seems to be the problem anyway? I'm a bit confused suddenly."

"You really don't remember..." Rosenburg looked astonished. "I wonder how that works."

Trixi had heard the commotion when they had found the girl. The women weren't back yet, though they were likely on their way. But she had not know what it was. Especially considering where they were at. It needed to be investigated. So she slipped away in the little chaos that resulted from the girl being found. She only caught a glimpse of her before she was gone, but that glimpse looked familiar enough for her to want to know even more what was going on. She got as close as she could get, hoping to get another look.

But she got something more. She knew that voice. Not well, but she knew it. It was that girl. Maggie. And she was obviously talking to Trixi and not the Doctor as he would never be able to remember whatever it was that she said to him. And she highly doubted that the man would remind the Doctor about it after she was gone. There was something there and that was what she was going to look into.

Quickly, she hurried back down towards the basement, hoping that no one would stop her. There was obviously something important down there.

Trixi found the Basement door was recently busted down. There had been an obvious struggle that had resulted in Maggie getting caught. The stairs were dark heading down into the basement, but if Trixi strained her ears she could hear the click of metal against stone. (have fun from here )

Rosenburg nodded at the Butler who proceeded to lock the door to the study. The Doctor stood. "I wouldn't do that. I'm not too terribly fond of being locked up."

"We just have some questions Mr. Smith, first and foremost, who was that girl?"

"What girl? My niece? Seriously who are you talking about?"

"The little girl that was just here, in my butler's arms. You spoke with her."

"I did? About what? I have to say I honestly don't remember a little girl being in here and that seems like something I'd remember. What did she look like?"

Rosenburg pinched the bridge of his nose. "Listen I honestly think you have a few screws lose."

"Wouldn't be the first time someone said that to me. Anyway I was talking to you about what you've found in your mines. You said you had found exactly what you had been looking for."

"Oh no we aren't changing subjects that easily. This girl, tell me about her."

"Ok seriously Mr. Rosenburg I have no idea who you are talking about. I don't know any little girls and there weren't any in here. You should get your eyes checked."

"No...there's more going on here. You know something Mr. Smith and I need to know what it is."

"You know it's funny I thought that there was something going on here." The Doctor glanced up at the clock on the mantel it ticked away the seconds to 5 am, it was now 6:18 pm. "But I must have been wrong. I suppose I should start on my way out now. I'll just collect my niece and we'll be on our way."

"Is this about the basement? You do remember the girl?"

"The basement? What is that's in the basement that you don't want me to know about that this girl found out about?"

"You honestly don't remember her? A little girl about yay high, blonde hair looked and smelt like she hadn't taken a bath in a while?"

"I can honestly say I don't remember ever seeing a girl matching that description, let alone in your office."

"This is ridiculous sir. I don't think this is going to work this way." The Butler spoke up. "We are too close to let something like this get in the way. Let me handle this."

Trixi stood at the now ruined doorway looking in on the darkness that was there around the frame. It was obvious that further in the darkness didn't persist into there. But there was something a bit more interesting then just the light down in that basement. The girl stood there, looking over her shoulder, back at the steps down into the mystery below, back over her shoulder and finally, looking ahead, she pulled up her skirts into her one hand and started as quickly and quietly down the steps as she could go.

The clicking got louder as she went down, and things started to finally come into something of a clearer view. There was no doubt about anything now. What they were up against wasn't human. They might have looked human, like Lut did, but they could not be. Thousands of things rushed through her head as she went softly down the stairs, trying to keep her heels from clicking against the wood flooring and giving her away to anyone that might be down there. Because they'd be totally foolish to leave things like the machines that she was starting to see unattended.

Her green eyes flicked around the space, looking at all the machines and things. Some of them were hard to figure out, but enough staring at them told her what it was they were doing. Drilling. Drilling into the earth for something. But the question was, what was it that they were looking for in the middle of San Fran?

Stars erupted in the Doctor's eyes. He blinked them away.
"Really? That's what you're going to do to get information from me that I don't have. Seems a bit ludicrous if you ask me." He stretched his jaw around letting it pop loudly. "Listen how about this, my niece and I just leave. We'll get out of your hair and be on our merry way." There was a light knock at the door.

"Come in." Rosenburg raised his voice to be just heard. A beautiful woman stepped into the room. "Hello dear." Rosenburg's smile was one of actual love, but a degree of pleasure that was just enough menacing that the Doctor was a little concerned by it.

"Hello dear. I just wanted to inform you I was back from my walk and there was no young lady waiting for me in the parlor as had been promised by our maid."

Rosenburg raised an eyebrow and then looked to the Doctor. "That girl was she your niece?"

"Seriously I have no idea what you are talking about, my niece is a young lady." The butler nodded in agreement with the Doctor.

"The child was most definitely not his niece."

"Right then. Go find his niece." Rosenburg said to his butler before turning to the beautiful woman. "We've had a small child snooping about, but she disappeared before we could question her. I suspect she has some technology. This gentleman claims to be a John Smith, here with his niece asking about our success. It appears that he knew the small child, but as soon as she teleported he has since stoutly refused to acknowledge her presence."

The woman nodded. "Allow me." She grinned and her form shimmered revealing a much darker and more sinister being that a human. The Doctor didn't even blink. "Tell me who the child is or I will kill you."

"That's the problem, I don't actually know who she is. Well not for sure, but if a teleporting child is your problem she probably isn't anymore. That's the thing she's got a really heavy dose of some very dangerous particles and now she can't keep herself still. Which seems to be the problem with a lot of children actually, mind you her's involves space and time."

The Rosenburg's were a bit taken aback at the Doctor's profession of knowledge beyond anyone of the time.

Trixi was distracted for a moment, standing still and looking at the machines in front of her. They were really there, really digging into the ground. It was too much for her. It was so close to her time. Egypt had been a long time ago, and again with Lut during Arthur's reign. And they'd been to another planet the time between. But here now, now was so close to here time. Children born now, this day, could still be alive when she was born, old, but alive.

So distracted was she with the thoughts of aliens affecting things that might directly affect her timeline later in life she didn't notice that there were actually aliens who could see her. And where coming right at her.

"You!" one called as he stormed over to her. Blinking quickly, she looked up, green eyes wide in shock. She cursed rather loudly and rather unlady like, turning on her heel quickly and ran up the stairs.

"Doctor!" she called as she ran, over and over, yelling his name as she went. "Time to run. Now!" She went as fast as she could go, hauling up her skirts to a level that was so very indecent for the time, but she didn't have the choice really. And she needed to not trip on the way up the stairs. Trixi was just preying that the Doctor heard her and they could make it out in time.

The Doctor raised his head as he heard Trixi's voice yelling for him. "Well that I believe is my cue to go. If you'll excuse me. We'll be out of your hair now." The Doctor ever slippery made his way past the reach of the Rosenburg's and their butler. He tried to open the door and found it locked. "I do hate locks." He pulled out the screwdriver and clicked it. The Roseburg's were now fully attentive to the Doctor realizing that he was much more than he had claimed to be. The door unlocked and he stepped into the hall.

"Oh Niece of mine." he grinned as she crested the stairs. "Let's go...quickly." He offered his hand to her and started running out of the building. He caught her as she started to trip at one point, and together the two of them made it out of the house and off the property.

"Well...that was interesting. What did you see?" The Doctor dusted himself off lightly as they joined the trickle of people making their way to and fro.
