If you need any help setting things up, I'd be happy to help. As a side note, I think I was the one who suggested The Evergreen State College as Washington's Haven, the reason at the time was I was applying there. In reality, I actually live on campus there now. If I could provide any real-life reference such as photos of the buildings or a map of the campus I'd be happy to do so. I also realize the advantage of leaving some things to the imagination though.

Name: Judge Joseph Maximilian Walleran

Age: 58

Gender: Male

History: Born in a small town in Southern Georgia, Joseph Maximilian Walleran never fit in as a child. Dubbed “Silent Joe” by his classmates, the young boy with the grownup moniker had always been quiet and thoughtful, observing rather than commenting. His quiet nature was often mistaken for simplicity or shyness, and he was regularly the target of bullies in grade school. He didn’t get into scraps often, and when he did, he didn’t always win. But he never lost twice. The quiet, attentive child grew to an intelligent and ambitious man, able to use his not inconsiderable wit to obtain his goals, without a cocky tongue to get his way. Debate group and class president led to Law school, lead to States Attorney’s Office led to Judge on the Reno Circuit court. This life of service, while applicable to his abilities, did not make Judge Walleran happy. His daily dealings with the lower dregs of society and constant reminders of the worst humans are capable of led him to have a bleak outlook on humanity and to hold people in condescending contempt as a general rule.

When the outbreak occurred, Walleran became the savior of Reno. Not only did he supervise the construction of defenses, he also grasped the logistical side of fortifying a city. Workers needed food, water, tools and supplies and sleep, and Walleran worked tirelessly to ensure that as many people of the area as possible would survive; providing, of course, they submitted to working for the common good under his direction. This display of leadership and effort made Walleran a natural choice for a slot on the council of leaders of Reno.

In the intervening five years, his view of society in general and humans in particular has not improved. He has only grown more difficult to please as he ages and now that Reno is reasonably comfortable (and quite successful as far as havens go) spends much of his time rooting out and punishing “undesirables” in Reno, aided by his many informers and ‘enforcers.’

Physical Attributes:


Attire: Walleran is always impeccably dressed, usually in a dark suit. Occasionally he’ll don a chambray work shirt and carefully pressed jeans when observing the inner workings of Reno, or while taking care of “unofficial” business.

Height: 6’1”

Weight: 255 pounds

Personality: Walleran is cold and calculating. He is not usually the first to speak, but when he does, his word is final. “The Judge” possesses a strong will, and does not suffer fools, or those who would disagree with his methods or contradict his goals. His view on the world, particularly people, is bleak. He sees everyone as either a fool or a tool to be used for his will, and is morose over the fact that his herculean efforts have not changed or saved the world. The ends always justify the means.

Arsenal: Judge

Strengths/Skills: Walleran is extremely intelligent. He possesses an uncanny ability to read people, often knowing what they are going to do before they themselves do. He has a loyal (if well paid) following of informers who keep him up to date on the innermost activities of Reno. Rather well respected by the general population.

Weaknesses: He has become arrogant and demanding, ruling over the city of Reno with a strong, if well-intentioned, hand. He expects much more effort and ability from his citizens than is reasonable. Has few friends, and those that are unlucky enough to deal with him rarely enjoy it.

Extras: Has a “daughter”, a young lady whom he adopted at the beginning of the apocalypse and has provided and cared for ever since. She is the one human being that he can stand to be around, and cares for her with very deep, paternal feeling.

Aweena and I restarted this in late February, seeing as no one had posted in this In Character since October of '11. You're welcome to page through, but we decided to use this ooc thread to post some links for our new OOC thread, so as not to clutter up the new one.
