WOTM: Theme Suggestions

New Theme Suggestions!

Theme: Despair
Components:

• Something is lost
• Someone died
• Character mourning over thoughts
• Role Reversal (With the bad guy having a happy ending)
• Beginning of a serial killer

That looks random, but please think about it! At least use the theme and get recommendations for better components if you don't like them. That would make a beautiful theme.

Theme: Surreal Story
Components:

• Takes place on another planet
• Fantasy (Creatures or Magic)
• Sci-Fi
• Mythology
• Recreate History (Write a story to any "What if?" scenarios that you can create about history)

I especially want to see the advanced entries on this one. It'll be awesome.

That looks random, but please think about it! At least use the theme and get recommendations for better components if you don't like them. That would make a beautiful theme.

This sounds pretty good to me, but I would make a few changes. First and foremost, "role reversal" can be simplified to just that, leaving the interpretation more open to the writers. For example, this would allow them to write from the PoV of the antagonist, making it seem as if they're the good guys and whatnot.
I would also change component 2, "Someone died" to something like "the story deals with sickness and/or death" , thus allowing for anything from deathbed stories and terminal sickness to reflecting upon a loved one's death years back.
Finally, I would drop Compnent 5, "Start of a serial killer", since that is far too precise to my taste

Hmm... Personally I think that this one is far, far too broad. Four of these "components" could very well be used as themes in and of themselves. Speaking of which, has "alternative history" ever been used/suggested as a theme?

Of course, I'm not a WOTM manager or anything, but that doesn't mean I can't make suggestions, right? :P

I know this can both be reduced and expanded, but it IS a suggestion

Specific themes are best avoided. They limit creativity and options too much- and all the entries would look the same.

I have a few ideas.

Evil wins - A dark tale in which evil conquered the whole or almost all of the world
Components:
-it's set in a last bastion of "good" or in a world completely controlled by "evil"
-the narrator is a neutral observer or a non-fighter
-the main character lost something or was forced to do something by the actions of "evil"
-during the story the character changes from good to evil or vice versa (in any imaginable way, including being revived by necromancy)
-the main event is a decisive battle or event which allowed a decisive victory for "evil"

Note: By evil I mean the standard evil in most RPGs-AKA demons and their human or non-human allies/servants

Colonization - It tells a tale of populating new lands
Components:
-it tells a story about a settlement or/and exploration of uninhabited land
-it gives a story about the founding and growth of new settlements or nations
-it tells about life on the edge of civilization and wilderness
-the main character is not a refugee for any reason
-the story deals with relations with natives or native animals

War & Morals - Speak of the moral or loyalty issues in a war
Components:
-it deals with personal moral issue of a soldier
-the story questions when an action in war is morally just or not
-the main character is not a soldier/mercenary and so on...
-the story question if generals/officers require unquestionable loyalty
-it tells about a event which broke international war conventions

Questions - Stories about questions that we all might once ask
Components:
-the story deals with question of personal identity or reason of one's life
-the main character tries to answer a question or asks a rhetorical questions trough the whole length of the story
-the story questions if the world the character is real or if the character is sane
-the story is made completely out of questions and internal toughs
-the main character questions his resolve/faith in himself

Snow - Snow-covered landscapes are a must!
Components:
-the main character is anticipating snow or loves snow
-the story is set in a snow covered forest or mountain
-there is no narrator or characters in the story, just a description of snow-covered landscapes
-the story deals with climate change and decrease of snowfall
-the main or one of the main characters is a mythological being which appears only during snowstorms or after them
-the story tells about lovers or close friends

Weird Christmas/New Year - Christmas/New Year with specific twists
Components:
-the story describes a historical or made up Christmas/New Year custom
-the majority or all characters in the story are not humans
-everyone except the narrator/main character forgotten about Christmas/New Year
-the story involves a weird crime in a closed-off building/area/island during Christmas/New Year
-the story is not set in the real world or a world similar to the real world
-the story is told from the perspective of an animal or electronic device

I might come up with more ideas or components later...

It says that Story Based on Lyrics has been done, but I can't seem to find it. It sounds very interesting, so I just want to know if it has been done yet
