Hmm, the Distortion one has me curious, would mutation count under your definition? (Not born, but introduced mutation over time.)
1) There is a difference between Poetry and Song Lyrics, mostly in what is known as "The Chorus" not being present within Poetry. That, and songs are not typically completed until set to music so you would be presenting your possible audience with an incomplete work.
2) Scripts, Poems and/or Song Lyrics work better as possible components rather than themes due to how WOTM is currently structured. (Poems and scripts tend to both be minimalist approaches, making them casual entries with the minor exception of word count.) This is also not counting the fact that such things (poems, songs and scripts) have a defined structure which managers might have to lay out, especially for scripts.
3) I'm going to list my favorite suggestions for themes out of my rather large list of theme and component suggestions (Seen Here).
- Personifying an emotion
- The Stages of Grief
- Piece/slice of Life
- Time Travel
- Reptiles
- (Bad) Weather
- Curiosity
- Logic vs Reason
- Distortion

That would probably be an extra component, rather than the full theme; but, yes, an event that happens over time.
I really still do not see what is wrong with poetry as a general writing style to throw out there at least once, just to shake things up a bit. I say "poetry" because I'd want it to be open anyway. I could say "rhyming."
Look, I am not saying that we should encourage minimalist approaches. What I'm saying is that we should try sampling something other than cheese. Despite the several flavours of cheese, it all goes mouldy eventually. So all I'm saying is "lets try pasta tonight."

Poety by its very nature, is shorter than prose.
The 1100/4000 word counts for Casual/Advanced would be pretty hard to meet with poetry
On top of that, the number of people capable of writing good poetry, in the world, is infinetly smaller than the number of people capable of writing good prose. Poetry fans are a minority of those who actually read. Thus, poetry as the theme would drastically limit the pool of entrants

WELL poetry Cas/Adv would be drastically shortened to something like 100-500 Cas v 300 - 1000 Adv (or even shorter), but those other reasons are valid. And there are other structural reasons why Poetry doesn't work but I took those up elsewhere to prevent derailing the thread.
Poetry cannot be split in category by length like roleplaying can. I like the idea but... 300 words makes for a pretty long poem. Having a minimum of that sucks as it encourages bad writing. Just like with prose; it is important to know when you are done. While purple prose can be damaging for storytelling, all that superfluous fluff outright KILLS poetry. Even the old, classic poets knew how to keep all their sentences important one way or another and they've written some pretty damn long stuff.
You could do short poems vs. long poems, but make that a <50 vs. >50 words. However would that suffice for a monthly contest?
we have such sights to show you
I would agree that Poetry makes more sense as a seperate catagory

I'd hate to say it but as much as poetry has peoples interest I don't think it really belongs in WoTM considering the issues brought up.
