In Japan during one of the world wars they'd force prisoners to stand outside in the cold until they were frostbitten then hosed them down with scalding hot water before leaving them to start freezing again... Supposedly, from some accounts, and I find this skeptical but still possible, skin and muscle would begin to slough off after a few alternations.

There was one Japanese officer who was famous for how he tortured people with nothing but a pair of pliers. Legend has it he began by ripping out fingernails, then toenails, then he crushed each individual knuckle, and finally finished with the testicles.
