It seems to me like everyone wants to be a total hardass at first, but then they're like "Screw it, no god modding for me".

I was shocked when I saw that competitive is winning. Maybe it's just the kind of RP that I join, but I seem to find more people horribly mutilating their characters and generally making their lives hell than turning them into super badasses.

What really interesting is when you take these results with the results of my other poll which found the vast majority of people identify themselves as Cooperative RPers. Roleplayer Guild - Forum Roleplaying Games - View Poll Results

However the margin isn’t nearly as decisive so I guess you could say most people want to be cooperative but end up being competitive.

Actually, Bosch, I'd say (more) that people don't know who they are and think only their method of RPing is the right kind which results in people thinking too highly of themselves and causing direct clashes/competition.

That’s a good point Dudel. Maybe people consider their style of RPing to be cooperative when in fact other people feel it’s competitive.

Or maybe people roleplay because they want to be their own hero, and fulfill this fantasy by trying to get RPs to revolve around their character, whether aware of their competitveness or not?

Or maybe they're like me... they're writing cooperatively and just for fun, but the writing is just so goddamn amazing that others naturally assume they're being outdone on purpose.

    Good one

I think a little competetive-ness is helpful cos it often encourages the other RPer to join in. If someone's just blatently over-whelming in their RPing and the other just can't get a look-in, that's when it becomes a problem.

    That's almost exactly what I said. O.o

Members state: "People don't cooperate with me so they are obviously competitive."

Which goes in a giant freaking circle until it gets back to the first guy who thought a bit too highly of himself. Psychology is awesome, innit?

I'm not sure if this is more of the same, but we are all the main character in our own story, but we usually don't get to do the amazing stuff we always wanted to, and so when we RP, extension-characters tend to be like us, but better. Depending on how bloated our self-image is....

...and I lost my train of thought. Go figure.
