Stormcloaks didn't even say you weren't part of them. And considering the player character was found with them, I guess the Imperial Captain got all 'better safe than sorry' and lazy to have you killed. But I'm a biased Empire guy. Plus, Morrowind and Oblivion made me love the Empire, so that;s more to my bias.
