I get the feeling that you don't become a "former" member. Considering their motto and end goal (to eradicate anyone who isn't a CoG), your character would die if he tried to defect/leave. You could try for a "narrowly escaped and is being hunted" story, but I dunno. I kind of like the idea of them being steady: you either are one, or you're a target. You can't join and you can't leave.
