Personality
There's no getting around it; John is a sociopath who is actually physically incapable of expressing remorse or empathy, although he's quite good at faking it along with whatever other emotions are required for a situation. His experimentation has led to a rather interesting side effect where he is only truly capable of viewing people as either prey (easy to kill) or predators (threats to avoid confrontation with). It is extremely hard to figure out what he views someone as until he makes a move, likely because despite his sociopathic tendencies, he behaves in a reserved manner that could easily be mistaken for shyness.
