Powerfully built and sporting a thick, square-cut beard, he makes for an imposing figure both on and off the battlefield. Pox scars marr his cheeks, and his eyes feature a grim, hard gaze. Personality: Being the fourth son of Daeron II, Maekar has always been an unlikely candidate for the throne. This simple fact combined with his ambitiousness has made Maekar determined and proud but embittered man that refuse to be consider lesser than his brothers, even though this sentiment is a common one among ordinary people and acquainted alike. He lacks the bravery of Baelor, the cleverness of Aerys and the gentleness of Rhaegel, yet retains a measure of the two former traits, and considers the third a weakness. Maekar is a martial man and well versed in the art of combat, something his oldest brother Baelor learned the hard way. He carries a large mace in battle, rather than the more common sword. Moreover, Maekar is a capable leader and knows it. He is proud to the point of being vain, and presently seeks the position as Hand of the King. While Maekar didn’t look up to Baelor, he very much regrets killing him. Opting to put the blame on one of his own sons, Aerion, Maekar has become further embittered by the ordeal, and is more prone to violence than ever. He feels disregarded by peers and subjects alike, receiving little of the praise he has deserved and all of the blame. Biography: Never expected to rule, Maekar spent much of his childhood trying to impress his father and older brothers. Sometimes succeeding, more often not, Maekar came to be a very ambitious and proud boy, refusing to let mistakes or shortcomings subdue him. Ever since being a child, Maekar has been powerfully built for his age, and swinging a sword came naturally to him. In this area, only Baelor “Breakspear” could match his younger brother when they were young. Whereas Baelor would grow up to be the natural heir to the throne not only by birth but also by virtue, Maekar were always – and perhaps rightly so – considered to be less refined, intelligent and chivalrous, always standing in his brother’s shadow. It was his shield wall that held against the "mad" attack of his uncle Bittersteel in the Battle of the Redgrass Field. When his brother Baelor attacked the rebel army from the rear the battle was won. Later a song was made about the battle, "The Hammer and Anvil", with Baelor the hammer and Maekar the anvil. Nevertheless, Maekar felt unappreciated. The victory was more attributed to his brother and the errors of Daemon Blackfyre than to his efforts. In other areas he also continually stood in the shadow of his brothers, wounding his considerable pride. Then, the Tourney at Ashford arrived. Maekar was there to see his sons Daeron and Aerion compete, while his fourth son Aegon was to squire for Daeron. The tourney proved disastrous for Maekar and his sons. Daeron drank himself into a stupor before reaching the tournament, Aegon joined the service of the hedge knight Dunk in a disguise as "Egg", and Aerion shamed himself during the joust by killing his opponent's horse. When Dunk attacked Aerion to defend an innocent puppeteer and Aerion demanded a trial by combat, Maekar supported Aerion's call for vengeance as well as Daeron's accusation that Dunk had kidnapped Aegon. During the trial of seven, Maekar came to blows with his brother Baelor, who fought for Dunk, and delivered a lethal mace blow to Baelor's head. Baelor survived the trial, but died soon after taking off his helmet. Maekar suspected that he would thereafter be held in suspicion as a kinslayer. Dealing with the problems of his sons, Maekar banished Aerion to the Free Cities and offered Dunk a position in his personal guard to serve as a role model for Aegon. After Dunk refused, Maekar allowed Aegon to accompany Dunk as his squire.
