He didn't [i] scan [/i] the ship, but scanned the space around the ships for soundwave transmissions. Kinda like the old fashion way of listening to a radio. Once they had your frequency, they listened to your language and matched it up with previously identified speech patterns. Then the computer attempted to translate Cybertronian into said speech patterns.

Ergo, the transmission was in extremely broken..whatever language they speak on the Columbia. Is it English? I mean, they're human, right?
