Bob walked into a bar. "I'd like a pint of beer, please," said Bob as he sat at the bar.

Could someone explain why people bold their characters' speech? I don't understand it, but I'd like to so I'm not always so caught off guard by it, haha. I shouldn't be, since I see it so much, but I just don't get it.

Well, bolding simply serves to draw the eye to speech/dialog, and to separate it from exposition, to make it easier to recognize. At least that's the way I see it...

Yep, just a way to make speech stand out. I feel like quotation marks are enough, but to each their own.

As stated above it's just a way people use to make their speech standout from the rest of the post.

Some folks, on OldGuild(R.I.P, you lovely devil), would use different colors for different (N)PCs.

Ah, thanks for explaining! I don't see the point in emphasizing speech when your partner / group should probably be reading the whole thing anyway, though, haha

As a GM I find most don't actually read the full post whether they should or shouldn't. So I bold the dialogue to make them think that is all the info they need.

And then they die by chainsword.

Glad to be of assistance! Lol.

I preferred using colors that weren't verified eye murders.

I'm in the group that doesn't bold/color the speech. Never saw the point in it, as it looks jarring to me, and I can differintiate speech just fine. I don't care if other people do it, just as long as they don't complain that I don't.

Ooo, nice!

I've also bolded and italicized speech, namely for my character Honalee, due to her being very, very young. Though I also have her speaking a form of "babytalk"... kinda like she has an accent. Which she does. And for me, since I only play non-human "critters", I also use it to make their non-human vocal qualities stand out.

Well, yeah, if your bolding the text to indicate that their speech is different than normal that's different. xD

Just a way to make it show, mainly because people like to skim through posts and it can help people catch what's actively happening at least.

I personally just used it to be eye pleasing though, once in a while my eyes would hurt just going through text that was all the exact same. The bold gave something a bit different that sort of stopped the blur/annoyance going on with them gave my eyes a chance to reset. I wouldn't have much (if any) need of such a thing today though.

The different colours case is only done by people for other characters (and I ever did it, it was a test run and I scrapped it quickly), but I find it's normally only used when people generally don't bother details who says what. So instead of say:

Ryan ran down the hill and said "I'm going to the supermarket", and Hordor replied "Hordor".

It would be:
-Using Bold and Italicize because coloured text is sadly not implemented on this Guild yet. :(

Ryan ran down the hill and said "I'm going to the supermarket", "Hordor".

Oh, I suppose that's a good reason.

I think this less so, haha, because it just goes back to writing ability. Even without color coordination, you should be able who's speaking based on the writing. So, taking what you said, I would know it wasn't Ryan speaking again since you started a new set of quotes for him. Plus you'd ideally start a new paragraph because it's a new speaker.

I think it's just so people don't miss it, I have bad eyesight so a lot of the time I have to re-read posts to see quotation marks.

I used different colors for people, even had the players pick colors for their characters and whatnot. For the most part, I had no problem with colors, so long as they weren't killing my eyes. Like darker colors on a dark background, like guild had.

I only bold my speeches when my characters are either...

1, Is transformed and in a suit of armor to simulate how their voice would sound behind it (you see this all the time in Iron Man and, say, Super Sentai/Kamen Rider)
2, If the character is shouting
3, If there's some possibly magic going on that is empowering the person

I never bold it completely. I also like to use colors to best match a certain power set. For example, a character in an orange suit of armor will have orange text or a person empowered with a purple aura will have purple text.

I just bold mine because I find it easier to reread my post (I tend to reread before making a post so I can make sure someone is responding). My eyes are also pretty bad along with the limitation of having to read via iPhone screen.

It's is still better to just explain and read the actions, I just feel bolder speech is like a little sugar for those who have a harder time. Especially those who need to catch up on reading because they leap in the middle of a rp.

But I don't mind those who don't use colors or don't bold and italics.

I used colors on the old guild, usually bright visible ones. But bold works as well.
