In Star Trek.... it could happen.... It will possibly happen.... there is a Race for it... but human tech is so..... limited.... I feel sorry for the poor humans T.T if they hadn't taken 7of9, or became allies with other races, the human race would have been wiped out eons ago. :3 As long as it is not impossible it can come about...
