Born in the Shinigami world Ran was never alive to begin with. The Kiyomura family was one of the many royal families living in Seireitei though it was not a very known one. The characters however that reached the ears of others were always known for their exceptional talent in swordsmanship and their loyalty. The Kiyomura family was small which put pressure on the children. They had to train hard, become powerful and serve the Gotei 13 as best as they could by any means possible. This was the climate in which Ran grew up. She and her sister Haiko had to practice swords skills rather then play with dolls and study history rather than having a tea party with the children of the neighborhood. 

And Ran was such gifted child. Haiko however was not. She just couldn’t keep up with the drills nor did she remember the names of important persons in history. She always fell behind when they did a race and was always clumsy. Still she did not give up and pushed herself to try harder Ran as her everlasting goal. Ran however envied Haiko. Because she was gifted she had to train harder and never had time for herself. When Haiko could go swimming in the pool Ran had to sit inside and work on her manners. A proper way of speech, holding a comfortable conversation and more of those trivial things. 
So the sisters envied each other. 

Still envy is not hate and despite their difference the sister loved each other dearly. Whenever they had free time the two could be seen together playing, talking, laughing. They would often try to sneak out of the manor (always after Ran convinced Haiko to do it) though most of the time they didn’t succeed. After all they only had each other for company. 

Ran strayed away from the Kiyomura family path of swordsmanship when she was 126. It was the year that Haiko died. Killed by a Hollow. The two had snuck out once again and managed to get lost in Rukongai when a Hollow attacked the two. Ran had her sword with her and attacked the Hollow vigorously, but the blade broke on the Hollow’s hard skin and was rendered useless. Since she had no other skills the two tried the only other thing they could do: run, but in vain. The Hollow closed in on them and struck killing Haiko in one blow and smashing Ran to the side where she almost lost consciousness. 

She was saved though by a Shinigami. Rather than using her sword this woman solemnly used her hands to fight of the Hollow and blew a hole in his head, making it disappear. From that they Ran swore to herself that she would learn how to fight without a sword. She would never feel powerless again. Sword were tools that could break, tools that could never be fully trusted. Hands were her own and they would never fail her as long as she had the strength left to lift them up. 

Not a year later Ran joined the Academy, saying goodbye to her family forever. Immediately she was faced by an enormous difference in people. All her life Ran had spend time around grownups and servants and now she was faced by hordes and hordes of people around her own age. People who had no idea who the Kiyomura family was, people who bullied her. It was all very new.

People often mistake Ran for a very serious person. With her stern eyes and way of speech sometime she can seem somewhat cold and closed, but actually Ran likes to talk, make friends and enjoy herself with simple things. She has a great sense of duty and does not hesitate to use any means but necessary to fulfill her goal whenever this is her own or that from the higher ups. We can see this reflected back in her fighting style which is quick and straight with no means of honor or fair play. If someone can be killed by using a dirty way of fighting than she will use that method. 

Ran is not the type for flashy stuff. Ever since she left her home she has preferred the way of simplicity over that of luxury.

[i]Zanpakuto Spirit Personality:[/i] 
Shiren is a complicated spirit and this is for the simple reason that it are two spirits in one. You have the joyful spirit Himo which represents Ran’s Shikai and the stern Tetsu which represents Ran’s Bankai. The spirits are exactly the opposite of each other in almost everything that they do. Himo is talkative, Tetsu is silent. Himo is tall, Tetsu is small. Himo wears light clothes, Tetsu wears a black suit.

Sealed the katana is horizontally strapped on Ran’s back. The scabbard is white followed by the handle of the katana which is completely black. On the bottom of the guard are two ribbons: one black and one white. When Ran will activate her Shikai she hold her blade horizontally in front of her and let it touch her left hand palm before speaking the release command.

[i]Name:[/i] Himo no Shiren (Ordeal of String)
[i]Release Command:[/i] Let none escape your judgment 
[i]Appearance:[/i] The sword completely disappears and around Ran’s hands form two black gloves with a silver ring around each finger. 

[b]Abilities:[/b] Himo no Shiren let Ran create strings out of the rings on her fingers. Ran can make ten strings at the same time though all of them can be cut off to create more strings. The length varies per type of string.There are five types of strings that Ran can produce:

[i]Himo no Toresu (Trace String):[/i] Very thin, almost invisible strings infused with a very small stream of Reiatsu which have no power whatsoever. However when one steps on the Ran immediately knows by a disruption is Reiatsu flow. Nothing happens to the one that steps on the strings besides from the point that Ran now exactly knows where the person is.
[i]Himo no Torappu (Trap):[/i] Trap strings are also thin and almost invisible, but these strings are also incredibly strong. Due their invisibility the opponent gets stuck in them before he or she knows what he walked into. The strings will entangle with each other and form a web from which escaping without a decent power blast is impossible. 
[i]Himo no Hagane (Steel):[/i] Steel Strings are thin, clearly visible strings for those who look well enough. They are use to cut through things especially things that can be surrounded and ripped apart like arms or legs or heads. Steel Strings are strong enough to cut through many things, but a strong Hierro can stop them. 
[i]Himo no Chaneru (Channel):[/i] Channeling Strings can be used to channel attacks like kido through, but also an incoming kido/reiatsu based attack can be turned away if it hit such string. When the attack is too strong however the string cannot hold all the energy and can either let the attack through or snap.
[i]Himo no Suitoru (Absorb):[/i] Absorb Strings do exactly what their name say. They absorb attacks or reiatsu and channel their energy back to Ran. These strings take most energy to produce and cannot be spread out over a great distance.

[i]Weapon Appearance:[/i] A sword with a round blade appears in Ran’s gloved hands. The blade is dark silver and the round guard is white. On the end of the handle is a chain attached that is usually strapped around Ran’s arm, but can be loosened. 
[i]Physical Appearance:[/i] The gloves on her arm extend until their reach over her elbows. Further there are no changes. 

[b]Abilities:[/b] Tetsu is a blade that can extend. It relays greatly on its power of speed and accuracy. It has various abilities:

[i]Tetsu no Muchi (Steel Whip):[/i] Swinging the blade Tetsu extends towards the target. It can then be controlled by Ran to make very abrupt and sharp turns. The blade is sharp on all edges.
[i]Tetsu no Fan (Steel Fan):[/i] The blade splits in five blades like a fan and those blades can then be used individually. 
[i]Tetsu no Yari (Steel Spear):[/i] The end of the sword becomes pointy and very sharp. This enables Ran to pierce through almost everything. A blow to the heart will certainly mean death.
