I'd actually tend to be open to limited mind control/empathic suggestion powers, to be perfectly honest. Although it is a touchy subject for many people, I personally don't really have that much of a problem with it. Unless you can instantly take complete control of everyone within a five mile radius, it really doesn't seem that OP. I see it more as a sort of Jedi mind trick, as in something which takes a very slight time to work and can be shaken off if the victim becomes aware of it. Just like being a bit tipsy doesn't mean you hold no control over your actions, being psychically nudged in the right direction doesn't necessarily equate with total mental domination. Someone with a gun would actually be more OP than someone with realistic mind control.
