Alexis had little inclination towards any particular form of breakfast, so Daniel went with the easy option. Namely, Waffle House. He started towards it, but paused to wait for her to catch up as she went for a hairband inside the truck, pulling her hair into a ponytail before she caught up with his slow pace. He sped up a bit once she did, moving for the yellow roofed restaurant, that had some light traffic from truckers and those seeking a cheap meal.

"Maybe,' he acknowledged with a shrug. "I'm not a mind reader. But even if they are, it'll be a pretty wide area to cover even if they do have a general direction of where we're going. We should have some time." He held the door open for her to walk through before following and taking a seat himself across from her. He reached for a menu and looked it over, while also commenting. "Get whatever you want. Don't want to travel on an empty stomach."

He mused in thought,, as a waitress came up to their table. "I'll have two pancakes, some sausage, and skim milk," he said, looking to Alexis for what she would order. Once she said, the waitress would move off, and they would have some time to wait, listening to the conversations of those nearby, the radio, and just enjoying the calm after the storm.

Daniel lead the way towards one of the nearest choices and with the limited funds she was sure he had someplace cheap was a good choice. Being a gentleman held the door to which she gave a gracious, thank you. They were immediately sat down at a table near one of the corners. Alex sat so she could keep an eye on the front door.

Their waitress was a nice woman, of about middle age. The stresses of the job had taken its toll on her appearance. She had a face of someone no stranger to hard work and stress. Alex wondered if she'd end up like that, especially now.

“Whad'll it be youngin's?”

"I'll have two pancakes, some sausage, and skim milk,"

“' 'lright,” she said turning her attention to Alex, “How about you, honey?”

“Just an oatmeal and water, please.”

The woman gathered up their menus and nodded, “It'll be out shortly,” she said as she walked away towards the back.

They both fell silent for a moment, listening to everything going on around them. The place wasn't very full, in fact, patrons were pretty parse. A radio played overhead from what she assumed as a local station. The music, was pleasant and calming. In the far corner, a muted TV played the news. She sighed, satisfied for the moment that they were safe.

She wondered how long it would take for the stress of looking for someone around every corner would take to turn her into their waitress, the poor woman. The waitress returned with his milk and her water.

“Here ya' go.”

“Thank you,” she said gripping the cool glass in her hand. She slowly took a slip of water. It was a bit stale, but she couldn't complain. She looked at her companion quietly firing a glance back at the front door every so often.

“How do you do it?” she said in a hushed tone, “You have people constantly out after you and you are so calm. Don't you worry?”

Daniel was able to relax, though his eyes alertly scanned the restaurant and the people within just in case, a bit of attention paid to the muted tv to see if they would show up on it. That would make for an awkward situation, though the fact that it was muted helped. The last thing he needed was to be confronted by a group of angry truckers. Not that he couldn't handle it, but it was a distraction he didn't need.

Soon enough the waitress returned with their food, and Daniel nodded his thanks. First, a sip of milk to wet his throat, before he turned to his food, cutting up the pancakes and drizzling syrup on them before he got to eating, once in a while adding a sip of milk or sausage.

He glanced from his food to Alexis with her hushed question. "Of course," he replied succinctly. "But I'm good at hiding it. If you look like you've got something to hide, you just draw attention. Besides, after a while I learned to just stop worrying over things I can't control. Now I just take things as they come." He shrugged before taking another bite of pancake.

Alex fell silent for several moments as she allowed the words to sink in. He was right. She had to relax a bit lest she give herself away. She took a spoonful of oatmeal. It wasn't Momma's thats for sure. She opened a small single serve of butter and stirred it in as it melted. She took another spoonful. Better at least. She quickly finished her meal.

She let out a sigh as she stirred the spoon mindlessly in the bowl. Pondering over everything in her head.

“I suppose you're right.”

Her eyes wandered to the TV on the far wall. Her face turned to a frown as she recognized the faces on the screen. Both of their faces looked back at her with the giant phrase 'Kidnapping in Colorado' along the bottom. She looked about the room to see if anyone was paying attention. It didn't seem so, but she couldn't be entirely sure.

She looked back at him, “We're on TV.”

Daniel ate his meal alongside Alex, it not too bad by Waffle House standards, and given that he was on the run, he couldn't afford to be too choosy. It was good enough, and it filled him up, which was important for when they had to move on. He wanted to do it on a full stomach, with the energy it could provide, not running with an empty tank and all.

When she pointed out the tv he glanced over to look, sighing as he saw the caption. "Of course we are," he muttered, and a quick flick of his hand saw the screen change channels before anyone noticed. Fortunately, that sort of thing was easy. "Well, at least they didn't claim we're terrorists or a national security threat. That should be some relief for your friends and family. I mean, getting kidnapped is horrible, but it's better than knowing that your child is a wanted terrorist." It hurt to be cyncial like that, but it was the truth.

In Daniel's almost signature calmness he changed the channel with a flick of the wrist. He didn't seem bothered in the slightest. She couldn't help but smile at this trick. It was this very trick that first clued her into something wasn't normal about her. She let her mind wander for a moment, but only a moment. Maybe it'd make a good conversation piece later on.

"Well, at least they didn't claim we're terrorists or a national security threat.”

She nodded, “Thats one way to look at it I guess.”

Still, she had to wonder about how Mama and Papa were handling it, and what of Chance? He is still in Iraq. He didn't need that on his mind. She sighed. Him suggesting them as terrorists didn't quite sit well with her.

She leaned in and spoke in hushed tones, “Is that what we are considered? Terrorists?”

He was fairly nonchalant, having grown used to magic and it's ways a long time ago, that he barely considered the quiet, simple spectacle of flipping the channel with a flick of his wrist. He returned to his food, finishing the sausage and moving to the rest of the pancakes, the thoughts of friends and family far from his mind.

As she spoke, he met her gaze, shaking his head in turn. "No, I don't think so. Then they'd just shoot us and be done with it," he replied, lowering his voice in turn. "At this point we're just national security interests. We haven't shown we're homicidal maniacs or anything like that, but we're still too dangerous to be let on the loose unsupervised."

He leaned back and grinned. "I bet this is the first time you've ever seen the government care this much about you, besides your tax returns and such, eh?"

Alex could only ponder what they would be wanted for. Her thoughts bordered on a conspiracy theorist's wet dream. What were they interested in them for? Weapons of war? Spies? Some DARPA project? God-only-knows-what? She didn't know but at this point wasn't sure she cared. They wanted them for some reason, and whatever that reason was, she had not intention of going.

Daniel seemed to relax and grin, "I bet this is the first time you've ever seen the government care this much about you, besides your tax returns and such, eh?"

She couldn't help but crack a smile as she scooped the last bit of the oatmeal from the bowl. “Got that right.” She sighed, “I suppose now we have our faces plastered on the news we'll have to change our appearance a bit.” She didn't like the idea, but she knew her most obvious feature would have to change, her hair. She loved her long hair, but its length and color made her stand out quite a bit. Maybe she could find some scissors and some dye or something. She thought it over a bit, contemplating if magic could help, and if it could, how could she command it.

“Got any tricks up your sleeve?”

Daniel shrugged at her question, finishing off the last of his food and leaning back to relax a little bit, a sigh escaping his lips. "Possibly, though it'll be less likely as we get farther away. after all, no one really pays attention to kidnappings in other states, and if we don't make it look like something is up, then people will be inclined to believe that at the moment when they see us," he replied, face calm in thought.

Her next question did spark some interest, and it was one that he had given consideration to during the drive. He was going to have to teach her somehow to use her powers if they were going to get anywhere, especially for her if they separated. "I have illusion magic," he replied with a grin and a slight chuckle, recalling what he had done at the magic show. "I suppose that may count as a trick."

"I have illusion magic.”

She listened intently to the words he chose in his reply which got her wondering.

“So does that mean-” she was cut off by the waitress approaching.

“Ya'll done?”

She nodded, “Oh, yes. I am.”

The waitress took cleared the plates from the table.

“You two want anything else?”

She shook her head, “I'm good, thank you.”

She waited for his response before heading back away.

Alex waited for her to be out of earshot, following her with her eyes, before continuing. “You mentioned illusion magic. Does that mean there are distinct types? Are you limited to certain ones?”

To be honest, she done nothing really more with her magic beyond the changing of tv channels and manipulating water. Was she limited? Could she learn such tricks? She looked around the restaurant as more people began to filter in, one group getting sat down at a table not far from them.

“Maybe we shouldn't discuss that here..”

Daniel glanced over as the waitress reappeared. "I am too," he added, and shifted to allow her to take away their cleaned plates and utensils. "No," he replied with a shake of his head ads to the question of if they needed anything else.

He shrugged at her question, working on an explanation before he began. "I mean, I guess you could think of it that way. I've just found that it's easier to do some things with magic than it is to do others. Like, Electricity, or teleportation. I actually don't really recommend that last one, unless you enjoy being unconscious." He didn't elaborate on hat point, but she could probably make some assumptions.

He seemed to agree with her next statement though and rose, waving his hand over a napkin. Where once white paper was, when it moved away she could see it as a few dollar bills, enough to cover their bill. "Come on, let's go," he said as he rose from his seat. "That won't last long." With Alex in tow, he left the restaurant and began moving away, looking for a safe spot to chat, maybe practice as well.

Daniel seemed to agree it was time to leave. Instead of waiting for their check with a quick flick of the wrist the napkins now appeared as cash, more than enough cash to cover their bill. Alex was impressed to say the least, still, she felt a bit bad that she would ultimately be shorted but she had no means to undo such a matter.

She stood and quickly followed him as he lead the way out the door. Her eyes couldn't help but glance at the other patrons as they left the restaurant with a small jingle of the suspended bell on the door.

Outside the bright sun greeted them and warmed their skin, although dark clouds loomed off in the distance. She turned back to him and continued to follow. “Looks rather bleak,” she said softly. Despite the prospect of getting rained on the thought of learning a bit about this magic held a great deal of appeal.

Daniel didn't look back as the door closed, taking a deep breath of the moisture laced air as he noted Alex's observation, gaze drifting to the storm clouds on the horizon. To be honest, he didn't mind that too much, The humidity was something he could live with, and he had never had much of a problem with rain. And for what it was worth, it would hinder the investigation for them, at least a little.

He didn't reply though as he walked, leading Alex away from the restaurant they had just been in and from the parking lot where the truck was still sitting. He walked a few blocks before moving to some cluttered alleyways, eventually ending up in a small lot away from immediate access, behind a closed building. There was general debris there, a trash can ,some cardboard boxes, that sort of thing, but all useful to their purposes.

He moved to the middle of the lot and turned around to face Alex. "So, guess this as good a place as any. So, do you have any questions you didn't feel like asking with other people around? I'm all ears."

Daniel lead her back towards the parking lot and then again down several blocks to an alleyway. Under any ordinary circumstances there was not a snowball's chance in hell she'd go down an alleyway with someone she had just met, but these were not ordinary circumstances after all.

On either side of them the alley stretched away from them. Trashcans and cardboard boxes sat messily against the brick wall, some even spilling their contents on the ground. They emerged into a small almost enclosed lot where more garbage tumbled across the ground. She watched as he moved more towards the center of the lot before turning back to her.

She pondered for a moment at his question before looking around once more making sure noone was looking. It seemed clear.

“Can you show me how you do it?” She hated herself for sounding almost childish. “I mean, how do you do all those tricks?”

In leiu of trying to explain it further she look a piece of garbage tumbling by her feet, an old plastic milk carton. Ignoring the smell of sour milk remnants she let out a breath and waved her hand over it. Before their eyes the plastic turned a grossly uneven gradient of brown and the carton shape was replaced more with an amorphous blob.

“Literally looks like shit,” she said jokingly, but bluntly nonetheless.

Daniel watched and listened as Alex asked about how he did what he did, providing a small demonstration of her own as she worked what magic she had on a piece of garbage. He chuckled and grinned a little at her comment, an apt representation at that, before cracking his knuckles, waving his arms a bit, and settling in. "Well, it's all in the wrists," he said with a snap, another flame jumping to his finger before he snapped again, dismissing it. "Nah, I'm kidding," he added quickly after.

He settled down a bit, gaining an authoritative aura that drew her attention, like when he was performing, pulling her eyes and making sure she focused on him and him only, only what he wanted her to see. Not that he was trying to hide anything, like some quick trick, but it was a useful tool nonetheless.

Daniel launched into his explanation then, working the best way to explain. "So, 'magic', what is 'magic'? As far as I can guess, it's something to do with energy. I'm not sure why we suddenly have these abilities, but I think it hinges on energy inside you. That's why you get tired if you use too much magic." He did the flame trick again. "So, you imagine the energy inside you, like a pool or reserve or whatever helps you visualize it. Then focus on it, and push it out into a form that your mind desires." With that, the fire spread to his entire hand and shifted colors, from red to blue to purle to white, all twisting and dancing before he doused the flame. "Am I making sense?"
