I was thinking of using a once-prominent member of the Arcane University turned senile hermit. Decades of delving into the paroxysm of Mysticism have severely infringed upon his behavior, irreparably damaging his reputation beyond repair within the Mage's Guild. He is thought of as a failure of a mage, who got too caught up in nonsensical impossibilities and paradoxes of Mystical study and has more delusion than talent.

So not a battlemage, and while he would be a member of the Mage's Guild, he's not the Scholarly, authoritative type - a proper knows-everything Mage would set up a nice contrast.
