Alright, I really wanted the deep ones to be lovecraftian deep ones, but that wasn't to be. So, here's my race idea to fill that eldritch void; The Vodyanoi: Humanlike fish-frogs of the deepest depths, the vodyanoi are an ancient, sentient race of underwater dwellers. Those who venture away from their homes seem to be divided into two main classes: Priests, the cast blessed by the Lord Dagon and Warriors, the caste blessed by the Lady Hydra. Every vodyanoi serves and trains as one of those two honored castes for at least 25 years before they may choose to fulfill more mundane roles within a vodyanoi community.
Greyish-green, with white bellies. Their skin is mostly shiny and slippery, but the ridges of their backs are scaly. Bodies that are like more humanoid versions of frogs, while their heads are the heads of fish, with black bulging eyes that never close. At the sides of their necks are palpitating gills. Their arms and legs come to long paws were webbed. They possess croaking, baying voices that are extremely expressive, holding all the dark shades of emotion which their staring faces lack. Their bodies remain forever young, aging to maturity and then maintaining youth. They do not die of old age, but by accident or violence. This is fortunat since an ancient curse levied against them all prevents them from producing offspring with one another. In order to reproduce, they must mate with other sentient races of the waters or humans. These marriages produce hybrid children who eventually transform into full vodyanoi in a strange version of puberty.

Vodyanoi seldom come on shore, but when they do, it is typically thought to be with evil intentions toward humans. They avenge real or imagined injuries, retaliating against pearl divers who trespassed on their territory or simply going on crusades. Of all the sentient aquatic races, the Vodyanoi seem the most inclined toward outright racism against the land dwelling humans. Perhaps this is because they physically resemble them the least. At other times lone vodyanoi will come ashore to seek out a human mate. Admitedly, this can be a tricky proposition. But they reproduce to honor their gods and each other. Therefore it is considered a noble decision. And a vadyanoi who falls in love with a human but whose parents despise humanity will find that they quickly change their tune if a pregnancy is involved. However, they must carry enchanted "breathing stones" to remain on land for more than a day. To lose this stone is to face death if one does not find a suitable body of water within one hour. As a whole, they are very religious and hold their priests in high esteem. The priests themselves appear to worship many water gods, but all are secondary to their two main deities. Some of the priests are acolytes of the Lord Dagon, while others serve the Lady Hydra. Priests often support their warriors with magic. They are able to heal allies, blind opponents, and summon various sea creatures to fight alongside them. The priest (a term which applies to males and females) normally wields a staff and wears a cermonial mask with straps of leather falling on his shoulders. His mask and the bracelets on his hand emphasize that the vodyanoi know metallurgy and view metal as a rare and valuable rescource. The remaining elements of this ceremonial outfit feature more common materials: his belt is made of oyster shells and stones, the straps of his vest of leather, his stone-encrusted breast-plate of wood. The stones have a religious significance connected with the cult of the water gods. The vodyanoi warrior wears a lighter outfit. His armor does not restrain his movement, enabling him to fight ably both under water and on land. The straps and plate on the warrior's chest are also lighter. They are not armor, but (as in the case of priests) religious objects. The netting evokes connotations with water, and was probably looted off of fishermen during a raid. They fight with sheilds and strange axelike weapons with spikes, short handles and curving blades. Of course they are also skilled with tooth and claw as well as various improvised weapons. Deep within the darkest depths of the oceans, buried within underwater caverns and chasms hid the glorious and ancient cities of the vodyanoi. Within such vast cyclopean cities as Ys G'll-Hoo, and Y'ha-nthlei dwell the other castes of the vodyanoi, their traders, craftsmen, fishkeepers, artists, performers, alchemists, teachers, miners and hunters. These vodyanoi are each a warrior or a priest as well, but they have chosen to set aside those honored vocations for now and instead serve the community in various ways.
