Hellboy 2 was an awesome movie, I remember watching it to pass the time when my dad was busy at some conference.

Why not use both ideas together? It wouldn't be too hard to mix the two and say something like her skills and powers were taught to her by her elven masters/parents/group or whatever you want to put there.
