Marriage actually predates any modern religion, modern concepts of marriage (love, attraction, monogamy, mutual respect) have only been around the last couple centuries marriage served as a political tool to secure alliances between families and royalty and a way to make babies. The Catholic Church only started involving itself in weddings in the 9th century
