Thessalia couldn't help but cuckle a little as she laid her mobile down next to her on the bed. No matter how often she read it, she was amused anew every time she read that almost childish mail from her brother reminding her not to start their newest game before him - except that this time, she could turn to look at the already set up NerveGear on her cushion; the game in question already installed and all ready to go. "A little bit won't hurt..." she said to herself with a wide grin that belied her words - and only grew when she spoke the next: "Link Start!"
After the lengthiest part of any new game - the character creation, leaving her debating her options for a long while - the world flashed a brilliant white before Thessalia's eyes - only to fade to the sight of dozens, no, hundreds of players scattered about a huge plaza in what looked to be an even larger town or city: The Town of Beginnings. "Wow..." she quietly exclaimed, instinctively taking a step back at the sight - only to realise that she had, indeed, taken one back. Looking down, she saw herself - her hands, lifted up to be viewed from all sides, all the way to her feet firmly placed on the cobblestone ground. It all felt so... real. As if she really was here. A thrill came over her at that realisation - SAO was going to be absolutely amazing! Stretching her arms out, walking a few steps - it was all so natural. Lifting up one hand and extending her finger, she called upon the menu, working just like the manual stated. A quick glance over her inventory showed that she indeed owned a basic set of light metal armour - essentially form-fitting leather with a few metal plates for extra protection - and a curved longsword. Equipping both right away, the latter turned out to come with a equally simple scabbard that was attached to her belt on her left. Satisfied with the loadout, Thessalia decided to immediately put them to the test - after all, if just moving around in this world was so real, how would a fight feel?
'Hold it in the right position and then...' Thessalia repeated the words of the manual in her mind - even as her sword's blade took on a faint glow; immediately growing in intensity when she felt the Sword Skill activating. Her body seemed to move all on its own - though not unwillingly - as her Sword Skill, Slant, brought her weapon down in a diagonal slash. The target thereof - one of the many boars that populated the fields around the town of beginnings - squealed in surprise at the sudden attack; having previously been minding its own business grazing on the green grass. Turning around to face its attacker, it huffed; sending out visible puffs of angered breath as it prepared to charge. Thessalia meanwhile looked over that the creature's health bar - it had dwindled into the low red with just one skill; much like she'd expected of a starting enemy. Turning back to face the boar, she gripped her curved longsword in her right, steadying herself with her extended left as she prepared to dodge in undoubtedly incoming attack. Jumping to one side as the boar charged with an angry squeak, she brought her blade down for a follow-up that took down the rest of the boar's HP, leaving it to crash into the ground before exploding into thousands of briliant particles. An elated smile came over Thessalia's face at her first victory - and her first Exp and Col gain. She definitely could get used to this!
Several boars later, Thessalia's health was starting to edge closer and closer to the red area - her light metal armour took the edge off the occasional attacks that made it through, though it didn't exactly nullify the damage. At least it was still easy to move in, leaving her content with her choice. She'd gotten used to the combat mechanics, too - it felt great to be swinging her longsword about as if it really was in her hands rather than just clicking a mouse button. Now, however, she decided, would be a good time to take a break - after all, she didn't exactly want to get too far ahead right in the beginning. Furthermore, she'd moved quite a way from the town's entrance that she'd left from; having steadily moved to avoid most of the groups that had started to form in the fields. It looked like some had started the game together whilst others had simply found themselves new friends right off the bat - which was not exactly something Thessalia was very good at. Perhaps at a later time, she thought, she'd meet-
Crack! A resounding thunderclap echoed throughout the world, startling Thessalia - and causing her to immediately look about. What had that been. Then, she noticed that, one by one, all the players she could see were starting to glow with a blue flame - which suddenly enveloped her too. "Hu-?!" was all she could get out before a teleport forcibly whisked her away - only to reveal its destination as the same plaza in which she'd started not too long ago. Confused looks abounded on the faces of the people about her - until a sudden flash blinded everyone yet again. Confusion made way for an ever increasing disbelief on Thessalia's face as the Game Admin described exactly what was going on. 'No logout? Every strike as painful as the sudden hit from before? Play through all the floors to get out? That... that's impossible! He must be kidding! Right? Right?!' Her mind raced, her eyes darted over the faces of other players - many reflecting much the same emotions as her own. And with that, the light vanished - and all hell broke loose. Hundreds of voices yelled all at the same time. An equal amount of people ran to and fro; perhaps seeking their friends or a way out. Others were desperately tapping their way through the menus - while Thessalia remained frozen in the same spot. "We'll... die? This... is real?" she whispered almost inaudibly.
"Ah!" With a scared look in her eyes, Thessalia realised that she had sprinted too close to the boar to avoid its aggro - much like she'd done a few times before, but now it was different. She'd spent almost a full five minutes remaining unmoving on the same spot she'd been teleported to; not giving any heed to the two men who, in turn, made speeches atop the central statue nor the window that popped up and asked if she wanted to join the guild 'The Legion of Light' - it would auto-decline after being ignored for too long. But then, she took off. Overcome with complete fear, her first instinct was to run. She was scared - scared of dying, scared of this world, scared of everyone else who might be out to hunt and kill. Scared of what would happen if she was trapped in here forever. It was supposed to be a game! How could it come to this?! In her blind flight, she'd ran straight past a small group of players who had been gathering their numbers just outside town; heading straight onwards. She didn't even know where to or why - she just wanted to run away from everything. But in doing so, she'd made a great mistake.
Her hands shook as the boar turned to face the intruder of its territory - the same weak kind of boar that she'd defeated numerous times already. But now, everything was different. If it hit her, it would hurt. She'd lose HP - and when she went to 0, she'd die. Knowing this, the boar suddenly seemed like a real monster; a dire threat to her very life. It was as if she really was looking death in the eye, no matter how apparently weak its form may be. The shaking only intensified as the boar began to paw the ground; getting itself ready to charge. She'd dodged such an attack before - but now? Could she really do it, with her life in the balance? As the boar lowered its head, it gave one final squeak - and ran for her at full speed. It was a sight that fully froze Thessalia - was this where she would die? Trapped in a game that was supposed to be fun? Like this, out on a field where no one knew her, no one cared, where no one would ever even know she had lived? Would she just fade away into nothing, her HP reduced to 0 and her brain in the real world fried by what should have been a toy, the NerveGear? Her vision blurred as tears filled her eyes - but not tears of remorse. Not of desperation. Not even tears of sadness - no, they were tears of rage.
"I... I am not going to die like this!" Thessalia yelled - and gripped her sword in its scabbard; drawing it and racing straight for the boar in a single motion - no, she wouldn't die here. Not now. Not like this. She wouldn't, no, couldn't! She'd promised to play with her brother! She had to go to school on monday! She wasn't just going to let some game gone insane break her down! She was going to take the fight all the way to the hundredth floor and she was going to break free of this crazy Deathgame! Filled with untold fury - at herself, at the game, at its developer - she yelled as her sword began to glow...
Thessalia's hand tightly gripped the pommel of her longsword, its curved blade still sheathed in the scabbard at her left side. She'd yet to upgrade it - much like her light metal armour, the dark-brown, almost black leather still being the same as she'd started out with; the metal plates having taken hundreds of hits in the past week. She was standing off to the side of the large gathering before the huge stone door - the First Floor's Boss Room. This was it. The first step to clearing the game. The past week, she'd done nothing but grind - only resting at the cheapest inn she could find when she felt herself being overwhelmed with fatigue. Thirst and hunger were often part of her daily training as she only spent the absolute minimum that she needed. The few quests she'd completed hadn't given her any new pieces of useful equipment - and she had yet to find a actually useable upgrade to the starter equipment in the NPC shops she had visited that actually seemed worth their price. She'd avoided just about any contact with other players - even the few blacksmiths that were offering their wares to the more combat-oriented players.
Either way, however, her continuous training had at least shown some results - swinging her sword was almost as natural to her as walking and breathing in this world. Futhermore, she already had a good amount of Exp and Col from the many hours spent grinding - she was up there with the other forerunners in those regards. But the opponent that awaited now was no mere bog-standard boar or such - it was the First Boss. One man - the leader of the largest group, the guild 'The Legion of Light' - was already announcing the battle plan. Glancing around, she noticed that she wasn't the only solo player about - but the number of small groups and guilds easily outnumbered them. But that was none of her concern - she wasn't here for them. She was here to kill the boss - a determination that didn't waver when the door was slowly pushed open; instead growing only stronger as she gripped her curved longsword tighter yet when the raid party charged into the room.
Breathing heavily, Thessalia slowly slid down the wall she was leaning against - it was over. The shards of light that had one been the boss faded into nothingness as the reward screen popped up before her, showing a handsome amount of both exp and col. Her gaze moved over the battlefield - most of the survivors were in a similar state to her; exhausted from the fight and barely catching their breaths. Some were exhilerated by the victory - but many more were only just coming to grips with the fact that their comrades had died. Well and truly died - not just respawning back in town. Thessalia herself had come far too close for her liking during the fight, too - a wide chain swipe having been aimed her way after she'd gone in for a series of stabs against the thick skin and armour of the boss. Her HP already lowered from the occasional near-blocks and the constant heat, she'd thought she wouldn't make it in time - until one of the smaller groups struck the chains to the side; severing it in their counter-attack before it could hit one of their own and, by extension, Thessalia. There had been no time to thank them - furthermore, they were simply doing what needed to be done while the boss was still alive.
Lifting a health potion - the last one she still had, Thessalia noticed - to her lips, she looked at the contents of the small glass bottle before downing it in a single motion; causing her health to slowly climb back out of the red and into the yellow area. Forcing herself back on her feet, Thessalia dragged herself across the Boss' room and toward the already open door that would lead to the Second Floor - she wasn't the first, but among them. She didn't look back, either - she didn't want to be reminded of the sight of some of the other solo players that had died just inches beside her; the look of pain, fear and despair on their faces. Shaking the images out of her head, Thessalia pressed onward - even as she felt the fatigue of the fight and continuous lack of sleep slowly catching up to her all the while she ascended the stairs to the Second Floor.
By the time she reached the town that would no doubt be her home here on the Second Floor, Thessalia was only barely holdig herself up; dragging her feet rather than really walking into the safe zone. Her health had returned to the red area - underway, she'd been blindsided by two onrushing oxen that she'd struggled far too much against for her liking; even having to be aided by a helpful player on the second one. Dozens of people had already passed her on her way here - meaning that the town was already starting to fill up with players before she got there. Hazily looking over the nearest buildings, she spotted one sporting a hanging sign that read "Inn" and headed for it. Shaking her head to clear herself of the drowsiness, Thessalia vowed get more sleep in the future - she couldn't let her condition affect her ability to fight. "A room for a night," she weakly requested from the Innkeeper, ignoring the other players that were already present - some in joyous celebration over the Clearing of Floor One, other in a far more sombre mood. Accepting the small fee for the room, she climbed the stairs that lead to the Inn's rooms - even as she felt her tiredness overtake her.
she tried to convice herself to get to her room - but even so, she already had collapsed in the hallway with an audible thud as her armour hit the ground; not quite managing to reach even the first set of rooms - her tiredness finally taking its toll as she drifted off to sleep.
