My boyfriend grew up in El Paso, and his dad and grandmother live there. Driving through El Paso and looking across the way to Juarez was really surreal for me. Having grown up in a small town in the midwest myself, I wasn't used to seeing anything even close to that. It was both sad and frightening. My boyfriend told me that when he and his friends were younger, they'd always go party in Juarez, since the drinking age is 18. I guess, back in the day, Juarez was the place to be on a Friday night. Eventually, things got worse though obviously, and now no Americans go over there that regularly. It's just so unsafe. Me, being a blonde woman who obviously would stand out, I was told I should never cross the border. And now ISIS. Scary times.
