Princes in the East, far from the capital and from its politics, began to feel disillusioned with the Emperor's work and his hardcore religious beliefs that he insisted everyone follow. The Confederacy slowly broke apart as warring factions developed and declared their independence from the Emperor, each forming their own Principalities. Krankar was one of them. Based around the slowly industrialising city of Trondem and the Palace of Krankar, it declared war on the Emperor, who later fled from the region in disgrace. The Confederacy was in pieces and was dissolved soon after. Krankar became a primary state due to it's proximity to Trondem and slowly grew as a series of clever political and economic choices from Prince Behald Ainvald, the founder of Krankar. The Ainvalds have been in power for the whole of Krankars history and come from a long, noble line of Princes in the region. As smaller border princes became victims of foreign powers swallowing them whole, Krankar continued to grow peacefully. The last war to be fought on it's soil was over 200 years ago between Prince Hannds Brexeter and Prince Yohan Ainvald that ended in the peaceful annexation of his principality into Krankar and the completion of the state as it is known today. Yohan married his son to Hannds daughter forming the Ainvald-Brexeter dynasty and family. Krankar has stayed out of international conflict and has seen itself become the destination of immigrants facing religious persecution from neighbouring theocracies. A cultural and religious melting pot has developed in the urban regions as a result. A secular government policy and a strong leadership has seen Krankar's neutrality stay firm through years, despite urges and threats from it's neighbours. The small nation is relatively stable, with a unique form of power-sharing between the Krankar Diet (parliament of 30 men) and the Prince. The Diet is elected by the people while the Prince is hereditary. The Prince has the same powers as the Diet and vice-versa. However, neither can do anything without support of the other. The governments have traditionally been rather conservative while encouraging freedom of speech and religion in it's people. Popularity with the people skyrocketed with Johen's father introduced an economic safety net for the people. Social welfare for the unemployed or pregnant and single woman has stop the spread of socialism and communism that many other countries see rebelling against their dynasties. The Prince has traditionally bought stocks in rich companies as compensation for a low corporate tax and the Ainwald-Brexeter family has become very rich as a result. Things are looking well in Krankar but it looks as though the looming body of war is just over the horizon. And Krankar cannot avoid war forever. Form of Government Constitutional Monarchy-ish with equal powers for both the Diet and the Monarch. Political Status Stable. Political Overview A unique system of power-sharing between the Monarch and the Diet has developed. The Diet is traditionally elected by the people to represent the people and a Chancellor to represent them but this has changed in recent years as several powerful, political families muscle their way into power. The Monarch is the Ainwald-Brexeter family with the Prince (or Princess, though there hasn't been a Princess in recent history) serving as the link between the Monarch and the Diet. Each have equal powers in government but neither can change a thing without support of the other. The Diet is not split into parties as partisan politics is banned in favour of a single man representing the region he is voted into. The Prince is hereditary and is usually chosen as Prince Heir by his predecessor. Current Political Leader Prince Johen Ainwald-Brexeter/Chancellor Michal Poloskan.
