A combination of the two could be nice. The books themselves are a little of both, showing the students going through the motions but with the overarching plot that builds through the series. Maybe the various events they go through could lead to a bigger picture overall.

I think that because this RP is titled "Lumos," it could be fun to play the themes of casting light into darkness and/or bringing secrets to light.
