Background: Born to a British naval officer and his young Greek second wife, Demetrios has had a foot in both worlds. By virtue of his father's money and his own intellectual ability, he was Oxford-educated, and became something of a shipping magnate after working for a prestigious company gave him the experience to begin his own. He was still a majority shareholder in his company, alliteratively named Salter Shipping, Inc. when he took office however he has since diversified and reduced his position drastically to avoid conflicts of interest.
