Legion Composition Legions of the Middle Republic were known as Manipluar Legions, which consisted of three lines of heavy infantry. The first line was formed from new recruits (hastati), and typically consisted of 10 Maniples (120 men). The second line held the more experienced soldiers, called principes. They again made up 10 Maniples of 120 men.
