Oh, they detect mass? I wanted to speak about that. Hives give off a small heat signature, but they are entirely organic, so the best they can give off is a mass signature or radiation give-off.

Edit: P.S. - They aren't just spamming eggs onto the planet, they will be sending something that is essentially a greeting to the ships above before sending down their pods. They wouldn't send any pods down at all usually, but they sense the presence of another Hive mind, and they can get jealous.
