Expanding on the original pitch...

Kitashirakawa is just your average Japanese town. It is a somewhat urbanized place that used to be pretty quiet and rather unremarkable until the monsters started appearing. No-one knew exactly why they started appearing, or what they want, but there was no denying it. Right in broad daylight, monsters started appearing every Saturday morning, and disappearing a few hours later. After getting over the initial shock, the townspeople started to treat these monsters like a tourist attraction, as despite their odd appearance they didn't seem to be doing any harm. At least not yet... And so about half a year has passed since the strange creatures started appearing. It is Saturday morning, and this week's monster is scheduled to show up sometime soon... But hey, they're no harm, right? Nothing's really going to happen other than it showing up, right?

Of course, seeing the whole premise of this RP, something will obviously happen. Like, for instance, ACCEPTING THE POWER OF MAGIC AND BECOMING A MAGICAL GIRL! Anyways, just a couple more things to mention for now I guess. First of all is how powers will be assigned. I am still not sure if I want to do it this way or not, and if anyone objects to this idea then I'll scrap it and figure something else out, but the idea was that aside from the basic magical girl powers of enhanced durability, agility and strength, your powerset will be randomly determined. Basically, the idea is that once you make your character I will randomly generate 3 basic powers, and you can choose whichever one you like best as your initial powerset. Again, still not sure about this and if you'd all rather choose your own powers I'll figure out some way to ensure balance to begin with but we'll see how things work out I guess.

Secondly, I guess I'll make a brief mention of the geography of Kitashirakawa. It's a coastal town, and the edges of town that aren't next to the ocean are surrounded by small mountains and forests. As mentioned above, it's somewhat urbanized, although there is still a fair amount of greenery in town, most notably the Kino Forest on the southern outskirts and Amano Park in the center of town. A few minutes walk from the park is Takamachi Academy, the only school in town, which consists of a few buildings each dedicated to the different age groups. As it was rather unremarkable before the monsters started appearing, there aren't really many attractions in town; the only notable ones are the Ichigo Café, a cosplay café popular as a teenage hangout spot, and the Revolution, a nightclub under construction after the monsters started bringing in more tourists that is nearing completion.

Random powers, ho!

I actually like the random powers. CS will be up soon!

I love the idea of random powers. Here's my CS, and I hope you don't mind if it's short. Usually I write extremely long ones, but since I think you said it was alright if it was shorter, I'll just get it done quickly.

Name: Suki Arakida

Age: 14

Appearance:

Personality: Suki is very artistic. She enjoys creating things, and quite often she has periods in which she has a very strong desire to create. She is a social person, and loves making jokes, although when the joke is turned on her, it can hurt her quite a lot. Struggling with self-confidence for a long time, she just recently gained a huge boost in confidence and ego.

History: Suki grew up under a lot of stress. Her parents always pushed very good marks, and she often had to use the arts as a way to escape the harsh reality of her grades. She got many good marks, most of which were over 90%, but her parents wanted more and constantly yelled at her for getting anything below their expectations. Through lots of practice, Suki became very good at drawing and playing the flute. She takes a lot of pride in those two abilities, and she uses them as a way to boost her confidence when she's feeling low.

Powers: Can turn clothes into weapons.

Appearance:


Personality: Riku is a very shy, nervous girl. She is easily embarrassed and blushes often. She is fairly easy to befriend if you keep trying, and once she is close to someone she is willing to do almost anything. She is naive and slightly sensitive, believing things others say quite easily. Caring is her default mode, and can often not say no to people. She doesn't have very much of an ego to speak of, being incredibly modest and flustered when complimented. She is a skilled cook and an intelligent girl, and is usually happy around people she feels are friendly. Spends time reading or playing with her cat, Chi.

History: Her mother has always been rather sickly, but was always there for her. Riku studied hard in school, trying to earn her best in grades. Her mother supported her, even though she was weak, and she wishes to help her mother be cured. Her father taught her cooking at a young age, and she feels determined to become a known cook, despite her shyness. Her mother studies with her and her younger sister, Mika, helping her gain good scores on tests,. She has a part time job at a cafe with her father, a baker.

Name: Hitomi Kuwahara

Appearance:

Personality: Hitomi is rebellious by nature and a bit of a tomboy. There isn't a school rule she hasn't broken nor a subject that she hasn't failed. Hitomi isn't very concerned with her grades, she's happy as long as she passes the class at the end of the year. Despite the nagging of her parents and elder siblings, she would rather spend time at the closest arcade or at the park, than be stuck indoors with her textbooks. She usually does not get along with authority figures and adults in general but has no trouble befriending most teenagers her age. She is not judgmental in the least; and tries to befriend all sorts of people regardless of their nature or interests. However, she doesn't like it when her peers start nagging about her grades because it usually leads to arguments. Hitomi has a fiery temper and when enraged she often says things she regrets later. Also, she isn't the most sophisticated person around; so her manners can be a bit crude at times.

History: Hitomi comes from an average family, her father is a typical salary man and her mother is a housewife. She has two elder sisters, both of which have perfect grades and find Hitomi's grades embarrassing.Naturally, the sisters therefore often have fights over her grades. Her parents don't feel the need to scold Hitomi every now and then, seeing how the elder sisters fulfill that role literally every day. Hitomi is given a monthly allowance but it gets squandered over candies and games within a week , after which Hitomi often resorts to borrowing money from her friends.

Powers: The power to make inanimate objects float on command.

Name: Katsumi Ichimonji

Age: 15

Appearance: "J-just a second..." She's about 5'1" and usually ties her hair in twintails. As for her magical girl outfit, the one on the left, basically.

Personality: Katsumi can be somewhat shy and awkward in most social situations, with a tendency to come up with the perfect response to something...about 5 minutes after it was said. However, if she feels comfortable around someone or the subject turns to something she likes, she becomes more cheerful and energetic. She can be surprisingly hammy in the rare situations she thinks it's appropriate. She is a fan of an assortment of manga and anime, ranging from slice of life comedy to shonen action to psychological horror, as well as assorted tokusatsu series of varying degrees of cheesiness.

History: Katsumi's past has never been particularly interesting. Her parents have a loving marriage, her little brother is alive and well (and a bit of a brat) and she's lived in the same house since she was born. Perhaps the most impressive thing is her consistently above average grades despite studying being a lower priority than anime and video games in her mind. In the past year, her mother decided she's old enough to not need an allowance any more, leading to Katsumi getting a part time job as a waitress at the Ichigo Café.

Question, I mean for my character to have a background that isn't excessively depressing or angsty, but does have a bit of drama. Is this okay, even though we're supposed to be relatively normal? Can I organize that sort of thing with the GM?

Name: Miyako Komatsu

Age: 14

Personality: Suspicious, possibly delusionally paranoid, Miyako believes that many everyday occurrences are part of some giant conspiracy. For example, the frequent monster appearances. Her beliefs may outstrip the facts or her ability to back them up, but so long as there isn't 100% certainty, she will hold to her beliefs. Carries an eclectic assortment of items, investigative, she's also very ignorant of the ridicule she gets. If you were in a crowded room, she would be the one in the corner furiously scribbling in a notebook while muttering under her breath about chlorine in water for brainwashing. Also a fan of lost causes, and while she's afraid of bodily harm, those she accepts as friends (After a thorough check to make sure thy aren't a shapeshifter or robot) can find that she will be completely loyal, when not dragging them into crazy adventures.

History: Miyako's father was a cop. Sure, he worked behind a desk and away from any danger, but a cop nonetheless, and she grew up on stories of his escapades. Combine that with detective novels, police procedurals, and several major government corruption scandals, adding to a series of events she keeps to herself, and she found herself falling into the life of investigation, and that never really faded away, much to her parents dismay. She's hardly the epitome of popularity in school, but she knows her stuff. Also currently unemployed so she can devote her efforts to research, for the time when she can present a major story that will blow the lid on a cover up and catapult her into journalism. Or something like that. She hasn't thought that far ahead yet.

Powers: Ability to control insects

• Personality: Keiji is a calm, caring grandfather. Well, when he's not putting his granddaughter through a training regimen composed of "feeding kitties while balancing a bucket of water on your head," "get a feather from that bird," and "catch that fish without a rod or net." Granted, the "kitties" in question are tiger cubs, the "bird" in question is a skittish parrot, and the "fish" is a barracuda, but he knows his granddaughter can handle it. She's HIS granddaughter, after all. Besides- he's made sure they won't actually HURT her. He just wants to make sure she grows up able to protect herself from whatever life throws her way. Oddly, he seems genuinely uneasy about the monsters.


• History: Keiji runs his family's ancestral dojo, having inherited the position from his father after he retired and moved to Okinawa. Keiji's family says he was involved in law enforcement, but Kitashirakawa's police department doesn't have any record of his service. They DO, however, say that he's helped with several investigations as an expert witness on animal welfare, and have designated his dojo an animal sanctuary. Exotic animals often end up there when zoos don't have the means to care for them.


• Powers: He's an experienced martial artist, and knows how to create incredibly grueling training regimens from everyday tasks. He also has a surprising affinity for animals.

And now the question I should have probably asked... who wants a martial artist grandpa?

And now for the power choices. Basically I just made a big list of different powers and put them into a randomizer. I've left the actual utility of the powers intentionally vague so you can try and figure out how they work yourselves. Just keep in mind that your girls will need to learn the best ways to use them over time. Anyways...

Suki Arakida: The power to create lights, the power to turn clothes into weapons (natural fibres only) or the power to create bubbles.

Yuu Tsukihara: Flower power, control over slickness or the power to create sweets.

Hitomi Kuwahara: The power to control your own body temperature (obviously with the power to withstand dramatic changes in temperature), the power to make inanimate objects float on command or barriers.

Katsumi Ichimonji: The power to control your own body weight (appearance stays the same, you just get heavier), super bounciness or spinning.

Miyako Komatsu: The power of rock, control over insects or the power to summon toys.

Hm, interesting. Personally I would have gone to the superpower wiki and hit 'Random Page' three times for each, but this works too. Also, does that first mean rock and roll, or actual rocks?

I... Don't like using the superpower wiki for this kind of stuff, since I always seem to get either stupidly powerful stuff, stuff that's ridiculously obscure or specific, or stuff that isn't even a superpower (one time I ended up getting "good business sense". Three times in a row).

I think my intention there was rock 'n' roll, but you can take it whichever way you wish. XD

Personality: Kika claims to be "as boring as humanly possible." She isn't normally much for socializing, though it isn't because she's shy. Rather, she is a very avid gamer, and lives a bit more in her various virtual worlds or in her own head than outside of them. She keeps fairly good, though not particularly remarkable, grades in school to keep her parents from taking away her games (though she will score higher if promised a new one or a new system), and she would rather go home to play online than join clubs after school.

She is normally very honest and loyal to friends, but seems to see the rest of the world as an RPG of sorts.

History: Kika's life has been pretty normal since...forever. She lives with her parents and her older brother, a photographer who she often depends on to keep her parents attention so they don't ask about her social habits. The two actually have a pretty good relationship, though. Her parents were often busy, but not so much that they could never see their children, and have always been pretty caring towards them. In her normal life, every day has been pretty much the same for a long time: Get up, go to school, go home, gaming, studying, dinner, more gaming, then bedtime. The appearance of the monsters struck her as strange when it started, and she actually is somewhat interested by them, but not enough to keep her from getting to the early release of the newest fighting game.

Recently she has actually discovered a great interest in music, and has even started learning to play the electric bass in the hopes of someday becoming a musician. For some reason, though, she hasn't even told her parents about this.
