Charter, soldiers do not generally rise through the ranks to become an officer. They attend a training academy (basically military college) and upon graduation generally recieve the rank of lieutenant (the lowest rank of officer).

It is possible to recieve a battlefield commission from a non-commissioned officer to an officer, but it is rare and highly unlikely.
