Going to school in a second, but just wanted to add to what Rode said. I don't wanna ruin the whole idea of each of your characters, so I personally am not going to deny any of the characters whom people are legitimately putting effort into. However, while thinking of an aspect I'd offer that instead of thinking about an overall 'theme' of your character, you should think of a legendary tale about a hero/villain/conqueror you really enjoy. If you're able to do that, parts of that character's story can be pushed into a more usable form.
As for Lovecraftian stuff, the other person I spoke to was very understanding of the reasons why I kinda shook my head to it. They thought of other ways they could incorporate their idea into the character, and some worked and were very good. So if it's really important for you to have a certain idea working into your character, but can't find a way to make it work? PM me and I'll help you the best I can.
