Someone he was close to was shot and killed and now he's out for revenge. He's sort of like a vigilante, but he will do anything to catch the villain who killed his 'close one' (it's not a wife or girlfriend by the way). But which one of the four families is more likely to have purposely or accidentally killed a young person, like under the age of 15? Maybe they were caught in the crossfire, or maybe the kid saw something they should not have and so a mafia member killed them. Which family is more likely to have done that? Which ever it is, John will be working for that family's rival. For example, if the cold/twisted Moriarti's killed the kid, then John will work for the Rosetti's to get revenge against them.
