After making the deal with the Hephestus kids he felt pretty sorry for the Ares kid, so he decided to maybe apologize even a bit. When he went over to the kid he saw the counselor messing with the younger kid, he felt bad now.

Alex walked over to the counselor yelling at him,

"Oi wimp! Seems like your friend had the right idea were it not for his stupidity! I was wrong though, /YOU'RE/ the retard around here, wimp!" 

Alex was attempting to lure the Ares kid into a fight, or at least to anger him for pure amusement.
