He used her as a shield from the flames until he started moving, then threw her at Adrian as he ducked forward and beneath the flames. He would have had to pass through the fire briefly, but he would be moving fast enough that it wouldn't do damage beyond maybe a good tan. Like when you wave your hand through a candle flame.
