Weapon types can be claimed for a reasonable period of time before a character sheet is submitted. Any type of weapon can be chosen as long as it adheres to the rule set in the OP. By chinese-style halberd, did you possibly mean the [url=http://d3d71ba2asa5oz.cloudfront.net/13000332/images/gf-001dg_2.jpg]guandao[/url]? That is considered to be a different weapon type from spears.
