If you approach the Draconian force on the edge of the clearing, you can still talk to them, just will be conducted through the two tanks' commander using the infantry units to speak. 

The living Draconian soldiers retreated- the tanks and the infantry drone units stayed. They didn't spread out, though- they closed back in, infantry surrounding the tanks.
