The Exbeast basically just agrees to help them after being negotiated with. Exbeasts have their own personalities and many of them can speak or at least understand human languages and use their body language to respond. Some might want you to give them something and others might just want you to prove your worth.

A hostile Exbeast can only be contracted if it agrees to do so. Some might agree after being defeated, similar to capturing Pokemon, but it's harder to make a contract in the middle of a fight for obvious reasons.

The actual contract is sealed by a magic ritual that all Summoners can perform however they wish.
