I didn't mind the city wide destruction as much as what most people seemed to. I did pick up on it, thinking to myself "Supe's has usually tried to drag the fight outta the city area code by now", but I just thought it was because he was new to the job, so liable to make mistakes. . . Destroying half of Metropolis being one of them.  I also thought it added to the scale and urgency of the fight, making it seem less like a punch up between two pissed dudes, and more like a battle for the fate of the world.
