I would think that the major companies, such as SpaceX or other private firms would be involved, rather than Virgin Galactic- though I know that Virgin is growing somewhat. Your character would be scattered from the main group, and that I like too- the Mars ship wouldn't be a colossus, but it would be significant, being something that is under construction.
