Lesson? Pirates aren't idiots and can have any type of lovely ship I can think of to enforce this,(at least in my region of space) [b]its best to stay in the "safe" areas.[/b] (In or really near the FTL highways)


Also @KeyGuy, no, Pirate situation is local. 

Under normal circumstances I'd say I suppose so but pirates round' these parts are very careful. Usually preying on stragglers or the unfortunate (aradites). Pirates use advanced ECM and stealth systems (if everyone saw one coming, they'd run.) so the area isn't going to be obvious.
