Even then those are probably man-made elements that you are creating your self.
Except for referenconium from the Andromeda RP, because apparently that only exists in supernovae which the Romans apparently completely and absolutely control because of course they do, and every planet which you demand it to be on (Mostly the ones you plan to conquer). You see, what Duck is getting at is the flawed idea that an economy wouldn't exist because stuff we consider valuable is everywhere and cheap. What he fails to understand is that the spices in his damn food were worth their weight in gold, and that economies actually change. There are new materials that are valuable, and the old ones are cheap as shit. He would know this if he was awake during any given World Civ class that involved any mention of Portugal.
Economies do change, and spices are worth their weight in gold. However even new materials could still be easily found, or possibly manufactured with enough understanding of physics. Space is pretty big, their is millions of stars in the galaxy. It be fully possible to find new materials easily. Unless it's something only one nation knows how to create somehow, but even then that does not necessitate a galaxy wide trade network, that just necessitates a few freighters and trade deals here and there. I am not saying a economy would not exist, I am just saying it would be vastly different then how we understand them. And no referenconium was actually found on the Roman's homeworld, and most of it is located in their home system.
