I'm not sure that it needs to be demonic per say.  It would be more entertaining if it was a paradise to them.  If it looked amazing but was actually really dangerous that would be awesome.  It could be a powerful conjurer that is trying to make a world for himself as well as some sort of artifact to maintain both it and the barrier when he dies so that it continues to exist.
