I was thinking it could work like this:

The gauntlets have a special tie to the area they're on, and whenever they activate them, the gauntlet 'saves' the point in time when they're activated. Once the fight is over, the time resets and they're back to how they were before.
Because of this system, you can't actually grow stronger or change [i]physically[/i] during fights, but you retain all knowledge, memory and experience of it.
