My weird classmates and the sprinkler incident (whose culprit I knew, without any basis, was Kaori) seemed a little small compared to the rumors going around. There was a murderer on the loose, was what I had heard. Worse, the victim had been the kind security guard who had shown me the way to my class on my first day. That someone could just be killed like that, and that the murderer was still free to kill again, made me much more angry that I would have imagined. It was with those feeling that I noticed at first a note affixed to the wall of one of the corridors of the school. I was on my way to the cafeteria, but the note's contents brought me to a sudden halt. "Recruiting to fight the white chapel ghoul". And, in very small letters, nearly unreadable, something about power boosts and collateral damage. I didn't particularly care for said boost, but the ghoul part intrigued me. If memory served me well, ghouls were a kind of flesh eating monster. But, was it possible that such a thing existed? I reminded myself that, in this city, almost every powered individual seemed to like going by some sort of grandiose codename, like that ice stripper girl calling herself Absolute Zero. This ghoul was probably just a delinquent esper. As much as I was curious, I decided to disregard the recruitment call. I had no fighting abilities to speak of, and had no desire to fight either. Ignoring the note, I resumed my way to the cafeteria. Reaching the cafeteria, I had some silly hope of being able to find a good tea that would help me settle down a bit. Unfortunately, I was fairly convinced the cheap tea I was able to acquire would fail to do that, even combined with the sandwich I had also bought. The place was fairly empty, and finding an empty table would be easy. However, I changed plans when I noticed a frustrated looking boy sitting alone in front of untouched food. I was fairly sure he was one of my classmates, but I had not caught his name on the first day, probably thanks to Kaori's prank. I put down my tray with the teacup and the sandwich in the place in front of him "Do you mind if I sit here?" I asked, and, without actually waiting for an answer, did just that. "You also got interrupted during the introductions thanks to the sprinklers, right? I'm Kei, a magician." I hoped I was not being terribly invasive while attempting to be friendly.
