The fastest way to get started is probably to just find something that interests you (an interest check or a roleplay looking for more players) and follow along. I'm sure most GMs running a roleplay would like to help you get started.

 Thanks =) I came here after hearing about Play by Post roleplay in general (me and a couple of friends [i]tried[/i] to play D&D once, it...didn't go well), I just googled 'play by post roleplay' and this was pretty much the first result that came up  =D
