Oh, groovy. As a random heads up for everybody, I'm waiting on a bit of info from the All Powerful. I'll have my post up not long after I get it. Just directional info and whatnot.

The All Powerful delivers:

As you can see, I've high-lighted the three villages in your immediate AO.

In my future posts, any VC/NVA patrols or otherwise will be accompanied with a similar picture denoting their location, to avoid confusion. Can't have you guys getting lost in the woods now, can I?

I do find it kind of amusing how many guys are packing .45s in this little gang who wouldn't have been issued them, but then our machine-gunner doesn't have one. It just kind of makes me smile haha

Sorry, I thought it appropriate to have a backup. While Dodgers isn't an officer per-se it would be easy to buy one or acquire one through various means. A 1911 would be a good choice, especially with ammo in the area. I also never indicated that it was "issued" to him.

I also wonder if anybody else besides the pigman and his assistant are carrying ammo for the pig. From what I haven heard it was common practice for others in the unit to carry supplies for some of the others, sharing the load, such as extra ammo for the pig, extra mortar rounds if there's a mortar team, extra rifle grenades, and so on. I've seen some of this from modern combat footage as well. It doesn't seem like people are carrying much extra here, but it was a thought I figured I would share.

I'd be down with a few others carrying pig ammo. A Platoon Sergeant wouldn't be, so that's why I didn't give him any. Rank comes with privilege, and one of those privileges is not carrying 20lbs of extra rounds when there are other troops available for that.

Oh, and a note on the marching orders...Best I could come up with for the scenario. A The wedge is bad juju in close environments like a jungle, and an echelon right or left is going to spread them in a line and triple the chances of a booby-trap. They don't have enough men for a wedge to work anyway, since it's a fireteam formation, not a squad formation.

Plus you never walk in a straight line. People are in each other's line of fire from both directions, and a line of dismounts is a machine-gunner's wet dream. Staggered column is the way to go for this scenario. No formation is perfect, but it's the best choice in the circumstances.

Yeah, I get that. It's more the positioning of people in the formation. BUT, with what they have to work with, it's about as ideal as it's going to get. Suppression up front that can take any of three main directions with the same kind of AOE in the back with grenades, or Dodgers serving as grenadier for the unit. Riflemen are positioned so they can coordinate in any direction and keeping their best assets in the middle.

It's very reminiscent of an adventuring party formation in D&D. Fighters in the front, mages in the back with other ranged/melee capable mixed in. Enfilade fire down a line would indeed be a machine gunner's wet dream and would be stupid. A MaDeuce is a hell of meat grinder in that kind of situation, but pass-through or over penetration is a real issue out there.

So yeah... It's not great, but it's about as good as it can get. Eli was mostly just commenting in his head about it, but is on the same page.

On a side note: This is why I avoid letting people into character's head, to see their thought processes. Becaus then tings come up OOC, and people want to start adding in OOC info as far as discussions go. Suddenly characters become psychic, or able to read a person like a book, which is an unconscious usage of OOC knowledge or metagaming and I avoid it often.

And that's not to say that is what RoadRash is doing, but it's something that comes to mind as I write this stuff out. I think that's one big difference between novel type writing, and RP-style writing for me. For a novel, the reader can't interact, or alter things, so by all means, they should be in the main character's head. For RP though, unless psychic, or very good at reading people... I tend to let them make inferences from what is said and expressed. Maybe this has made my writing suffer over the years, but I've been working back into adding thought processes, underlying feelings or emotions.

I've expressed that on the Guild before. It's something that again came to mind as I was starting this post. It's just something to be careful of, and again, not saying Road is doing that.

And no, I'm not angry/mad/upset/irritate.d I'm pretty happy, and calm and collected. Just putting it out there.

Carry on.

Btw, Tome, you have two Co-GM's listed in the Character Sheet Tab, and one listed on the OOC for this. None of them seem to be participants in the RP.

dunno if this is a mistake or what.

Yeah, I'm just explaining OOC. Ryan isn't going to know (or probably care) what Dodgers thinks of the formation haha. This was a personal explanation. Write however you like, boss. I don't let outside factors cross over into the RP, and SFC Davis isn't a psychic. Don't feel compelled to alter your writing style, because I know that shit is uncomfortable and makes it harder to work things.]

I just think OOC discussion of tactics and whatnot can be a good thing, as long as nobody makes their characters PFC Nostradamus.

Though the mental image of Nostradamus in The 'Nam is kind of an interesting one...

Oh I agree. Also PFC Nossie! XD I think I need to hit Photoshop or something for that.

OOC discussion is always good. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't any meta-creep going on. We're all good. XD

Barnes could have grabbed a handgun off the helicopter pilot, but he wanted to suck in a cong with that nice bit of shiny loot on a pilot with a grenade wedged in between him and his chair. When Charlie jostles the body, he gets a bonus frag along with the handgun.

Barnes is a shifty fucker that way.

Edit: Fixed the post, since Tearstone had his guy rummage the cockpit first.

Pilots tend to have emergency beacon radios, pistols and maps, however. I was going with the idea that all that was actually destroyed per a post, but that's the sort of thing that'd be pulled out of a helicopter before things went to shit. There's a pilot, a copilot and a crew chief to worry about in that situation.

I dig it. I never thought about what kind of stuff would be in the cockpit; I never had anything to do with helicopters. I was either rocking in AAVs (when we were stateside), or foot-slogging or up in the turret of an MRAP, MATV, or 7-ton in Afghanistan.

The only time I ever saw helicopters was from a distance, and I never had any interest in riding in one. I like to keep my military tonnage firmly on the ground, thank you.

was my baby.

Yeah, I had Dodge check the cockpit for precisely those reasons, but based on Tomes post, everything in there was pretty wrecked. I thought about leaving a grenade or claymore behind (somebody's bound to have one out of all the dead bodies) but since time was a factor... Also a grenade left in a deadman fashion like that would be a great warning that someone else was at the crash site.
