Aura hadn't even realized she'd moved to slap him until the slap had already struck his cheek. But then her rage burned and she was suddenly glad she had no fire powers. "How dare you speak that way to my sister? How DARE you?!" Aria ducked her face, letting her hair fall in front of it to hide her face from the boy. Devils. Surely not... But isn't that all you are? You burned those girls, burned them and watched and laughed as they burned. The one didn't survive and the other two were maimed for life. Isn't that all you are, a demon? Isn't the boy right? Shut up! she told the voice. Just shut up and quit bothering me! And it laughed. She raised her eyes slowly so that the boy could see the hurt there, and spoke quietly. Two words. "You're wrong." She took a shuddering breath, wincing at how thin the air was. She was really panicking, to be secreting that much hydrogen. "About you. About me. If we can control ourselves, there's absolutely nothing for them to fear. For us to fear. You say there aren't supposed to be elemental powers. Why then do we exist? Why would the deities, the higher powers, whatever they are, why would they let us exist if we're devils? If we're the usurpers come to claim their thrones, then surely we would have all died as soon as our powers manifested by a divine intervention. Because we are too painfully mortal" She waved her hands to indicate her tiny, frail frame. "too painfully mortal to ever pose a threat to a deity. So surely we are meant to exist." Aura had gazed off into the window of the dusty bookshop, hearing through the cracked-open door a man talking... She frowned. It wasn't any language she recognized. He was pointing... right at them. Her blood ran cold. She got everyone's attention by clapping as loudly as she could. "Okay, look. We can finish this debate another time. But there is a man out there talking in a bizarre language on the phone and he's pointing at us and looks dangerous. We probably ought to run. I can't pretend to like you, Jaden, not after you hurt my sister in this way, but we've got to stay together. You too, chlorine-girl-whose-name-I-don't-know, because you've been seen with us and that makes you an enemy in this man's eyes. This situation screams at me that it's a bad one to be in, so... We run, now? Somehow?"
